Some media players, editors, and mobile devices do not recognize Bethesda's XWM game-audio files, while M4A is widely supported for playback and AAC-based sharing. Converting first to an uncompressed intermediate avoids compatibility problems and gives FFmpeg a reliable input.

What the XWM format is

XWM is Bethesda's xWMA audio format, used for compressed sound effects, dialogue, and music in games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3. Game archives and extracted asset folders commonly contain files with the .xwm extension. The format is related to Microsoft's WMA/XAudio2 audio pipeline and is not supported consistently by ordinary music applications.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container. It commonly stores AAC audio, which produces smaller files than uncompressed PCM while retaining broad support in phones, browsers, media players, and editing software. M4A can also contain Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), but converting lossy XWM audio to ALAC only preserves the decoded signal; it cannot restore quality already removed by the original compression.

How to convert XWM to M4A

For desktop conversion, decode the XWM file to WAV with Microsoft's xWMAEncode.exe, then encode the WAV as AAC in an M4A container with FFmpeg.

  1. Install or obtain xWMAEncode.exe from the DirectX SDK or an appropriate Microsoft DirectX development package.
  2. Open Command Prompt in the folder containing the executable and source file.
  3. Decode the source file: xWMAEncode.exe -decode input.xwm intermediate.wav
  4. Encode the WAV as M4A: ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a
  5. Check output.m4a, then delete intermediate.wav if it is no longer needed.

If xWMAEncode.exe refuses a particular file, use the FFmpeg-based vgmstream-cli decoder where supported: vgmstream-cli -o intermediate.wav input.xwm, followed by the same FFmpeg command. Some XWM assets use game-specific wrappers or codecs and may require a current vgmstream build rather than the Microsoft decoder.

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software; upload the XWM file, choose M4A, and download the result when processing finishes.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The two-stage process performs decoding followed by AAC encoding, so it is a lossy transcode when the source contains lossy WMA audio. A bitrate of 192k is a practical default for music and general playback; use 128k for smaller voice files or 256k for higher-quality music encoding. Do not expect a higher AAC bitrate to recover details absent from the XWM source.

For maximum compatibility, use AAC-LC with the .m4a extension. If preserving the decoded audio without another lossy encode matters more than file size, use ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a alac output.m4a; the result remains larger, and it still cannot exceed the quality of the original XWM decode.
