A device, editor, or music application may reject OGM because it expects an MPEG-4 audio file instead. Converting the audio stream to M4A makes it usable in Apple software, phones, media libraries, and applications that support AAC or ALAC.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It was commonly used for video files containing Vorbis audio, and may also include video, subtitles, chapters, and multiple audio tracks. Older releases of VirtualDubMod, OggMux, and similar Ogg-based muxing tools created OGM files; archived video downloads and older media collections are common places to encounter them.

The .ogm extension identifies the container, not a single audio codec. An OGM file may contain Vorbis, FLAC, PCM, or another stream supported by the muxer, so the contained audio should be inspected before conversion.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container normally carrying AAC audio, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. AAC M4A provides broad compatibility and smaller files than uncompressed audio; ALAC M4A preserves the source samples but usually produces larger files.

M4A is suitable for music libraries, phones, media players, podcast applications, and editors that support MPEG-4 audio. It is usually preferable to re-encode an OGM containing Vorbis when the destination requires AAC, but it cannot restore quality already lost through the original lossy encoding.

How to actually convert OGM to M4A

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg is the most direct option because it can read the OGM container, select an audio stream, discard video, and write an M4A file.

  1. Install FFmpeg and open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
  2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.ogm. Look for the audio stream index, codec, language, and channel count.
  3. Convert the first audio stream to AAC with ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a.

The option -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, while -vn prevents the video stream from being copied. Use -map 0:a:1 for the second audio stream. For speech or smaller music files, replace 192k with 128k; for higher-quality music encoding, use 256k or 320k if file size permits.

If the OGM already contains an M4A-compatible AAC stream, stream copying may avoid another lossy encode: ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output.m4a. This works only when the selected codec and format are accepted by the M4A container; Vorbis generally needs AAC or ALAC re-encoding.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the OGM file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting Vorbis to AAC is a lossy-to-lossy conversion, so the result cannot be better than the OGM source. Keep the original OGM for archival use, and choose a bitrate at least comparable to the source rather than repeatedly converting the same file.

Use ffprobe or the converter's stream-selection controls when an OGM contains several audio tracks; otherwise, the default selection may produce the wrong language or commentary track. Metadata, embedded cover art, chapters, and subtitles may not transfer completely, and subtitles are not retained in an audio-only M4A file.
