JVC Everio camcorder recordings often use the TOD container, while phones, music players, and editing applications commonly accept M4A. Converting the file extracts its audio track and encodes it in an MPEG-4 audio container that is easier to play, edit, share, or archive.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a file extension used mainly by JVC Everio high-definition camcorders for MPEG-2 transport-stream recordings. A TOD file normally contains video and an accompanying audio stream rather than audio alone; its audio may use Dolby Digital (AC-3) or MPEG-1 Layer II, depending on the camcorder model and recording mode.

You may encounter TOD files after copying recordings from an Everio camera, an SD card, or camera-management software. Some media players can open them, but many audio applications cannot use the embedded soundtrack until it has been extracted and saved in a supported format.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container. It commonly stores AAC audio for compact, broadly compatible files, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. M4A is supported by Apple applications, modern Windows and Linux players, smartphones, browsers, and most audio-editing software.

For a TOD recording, M4A is useful when you need only the audio track. AAC M4A files are substantially smaller than uncompressed audio while retaining good speech and music quality; the conversion cannot restore quality already lost through the camcorder's original codec.

How to actually convert TOD to M4A

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option because it can read the transport-stream structure, select the audio stream, discard the video, and encode AAC in one command.

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source and place the TOD file in an easily accessible folder.
  2. Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or another shell in that folder.
  3. Run:
ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Replace input.TOD with the actual filename. The -map 0:a:0 option selects the first audio stream, -vn removes video, and -b:a 192k sets the AAC bitrate. Use 128k for speech or smaller files, or 256k for higher-quality music encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4a

If the TOD contains several audio streams, inspect them first:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD

Then change 0:a:0 to the required stream, such as 0:a:1. To convert every audio stream into separate files, run each stream selection with a different output filename.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the TOD file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. Avoid uploading recordings containing private or sensitive material to any online service.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding AC-3 or MPEG audio to AAC is lossy, so select a bitrate at least comparable to the source and keep the original TOD as an archive. A bitrate increase cannot recover detail removed by the original recording codec.

Some TOD files contain damaged or incomplete transport-stream data. If FFmpeg reports invalid packets but still produces an output file, check the M4A from start to finish; missing sections in the source may produce gaps or truncated audio. If the source already contains AAC audio compatible with M4A, stream copying may avoid re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.TOD -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output.m4a

Use this copy command only when FFmpeg accepts the source codec in the M4A container. AAC is generally suitable; AC-3 and MPEG-1 Layer II usually require the AAC re-encoding command above.
