Some phones, music libraries, and editing applications accept AAC audio only when it is stored in an M4A container rather than an ADTS stream. Converting the container with stream copying preserves the AAC data and avoids another lossy encoding step.

What the ADTS format is

ADTS, or Audio Data Transport Stream, is a framing format for AAC audio. It stores AAC frames with headers that let a decoder process the stream sequentially, but it does not provide the full container features associated with M4A, such as standardized metadata, cover art, and broad chapter support.

ADTS audio commonly comes from digital broadcasts, AAC encoders, media-processing pipelines, and extracted or streamed AAC data. Files may use .aac, .adts, or another application-specific extension. The extension alone does not identify the codec reliably; the stream should contain AAC frames.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only filename convention for an ISO Base Media File Format container, usually an MPEG-4 container. It can hold AAC, Apple Lossless (ALAC), and other audio codecs, although AAC is the usual source when converting an ADTS file.

M4A supports container-level duration, metadata, artwork, and indexing that raw ADTS lacks. It is accepted by many music players, mobile devices, media libraries, and editors that reject elementary AAC streams. M4A does not automatically mean better sound; the audio quality depends on the codec and encoding settings inside the container.

How to convert ADTS to M4A

Using FFmpeg without re-encoding

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method when the source contains AAC. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the file, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.m4a

Replace input.aac with the actual filename; an ADTS file named input.adts can be used in the same command. The -c:a copy option remuxes the existing AAC frames into an M4A container without decoding or re-encoding them.

To preserve source metadata when it exists and set common tags, use:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -map 0:a:0 -map_metadata 0 -c:a copy -metadata title="Track title" -metadata artist="Artist name" output.m4a

For multiple files, run the command separately for each input or automate it with a shell script. Check the resulting file with:

ffprobe output.m4a

Using an online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the ADTS or AAC file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Avoid uploading recordings containing confidential or copyrighted material unless the service's handling terms are acceptable.

When remuxing fails

If FFmpeg reports invalid AAC frames, an unsupported profile, or timestamp errors, decode and encode the audio instead:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

This creates a compatible M4A but applies lossy AAC encoding again. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the source; increasing the output bitrate cannot restore information already lost in the original file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Stream copying is normally the preferred conversion because ADTS AAC and M4A commonly use the same AAC elementary audio. It changes the container, not the encoded samples, so it is fast and does not introduce another generation of compression.

ADTS usually carries limited metadata, so missing title, artist, album, and artwork after conversion is expected. Add tags with FFmpeg or a tag editor after creating the M4A.

Some players reject AAC profiles or sample rates they do not support even when the file has an M4A extension. If compatibility remains a problem, inspect the source with ffprobe and re-encode to a conventional AAC-LC profile, such as -profile:a aac_low -ar 44100 -b:a 192k.
