Some audio players, editors, and game engines accept OGG but not AAC data stored in ADTS format. Converting creates an Ogg container with a compatible codec such as Vorbis or Opus for playback, editing, distribution, or archiving.

What the ADTS format is

ADTS (Audio Data Transport Stream) is a framing format commonly used for AAC audio. Each AAC frame has an ADTS header containing information such as the profile, sample rate, channel configuration, and frame length.

Files containing ADTS AAC commonly use the .aac extension, although some applications use .adts. You may encounter them after extracting AAC from an MPEG transport stream, recording with an AAC encoder, or exporting from tools such as FFmpeg and other broadcast or streaming software. ADTS is intended for framed transport and is less suitable than a general-purpose container for metadata and broad media-player compatibility.

What the OGG format is

Ogg is a multimedia container rather than a single audio codec. Ogg files most commonly contain Vorbis or Opus audio; the result is usually named .ogg.

Vorbis provides lossy compression with broad support in open-source players and older applications. Opus usually provides better quality at low bitrates and is well suited to speech, music, games, and streaming, but some older programs support Vorbis more reliably. Choose Ogg when the target application specifically requires it or when you need an open container and codec combination.

How to convert ADTS to OGG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop method. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and use one of these commands:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg

For Vorbis output, use:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

The -b:a 128k setting requests a 128 kbps Opus stream. For Vorbis, -q:a 5 selects quality-based encoding; values from 0 to 10 are supported, with higher values producing larger files. Replace input.aac with the actual .adts filename if necessary:

ffmpeg -i input.adts -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

If FFmpeg cannot identify a file because it has an unusual extension, force the AAC demuxer:

ffmpeg -f aac -i input.adts -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg

FFmpeg copies no AAC codec data directly into the normal Ogg workflow; it decodes the ADTS AAC stream and re-encodes it as Opus or Vorbis. Add -map_metadata 0 when the input contains metadata that FFmpeg can read:

ffmpeg -i input.aac -map_metadata 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the ADTS or AAC file, select OGG as the output format, choose an available audio codec or quality setting, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ogg file. Avoid this method for confidential recordings because the source must be uploaded to a website.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

ADTS AAC is normally already lossy, so converting it to Opus or Vorbis is a second lossy encode. Use a sufficiently high bitrate or quality setting, and keep the original ADTS file if it may be needed later. Re-encoding cannot restore detail removed by the first AAC encode.

Use Opus for smaller files at comparable perceived quality when the receiving software supports it. Use Vorbis for older Ogg-only applications that do not recognize Opus. Renaming .aac or .adts to .ogg does not convert the audio and will generally produce an unreadable file.

Check the output in the target player or editor, because support for Ogg is often codec-specific: an application may accept Ogg Vorbis but reject Ogg Opus. Sample rate, channel count, and duration normally remain unchanged unless you explicitly set options such as -ar, -ac, or trimming parameters.
