What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith's recording container used by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. It can contain captured screen video, microphone audio, system audio, cursor data, and recording metadata. You typically encounter it after recording a presentation, software demonstration, lecture, or support session with Camtasia.

TREC is not a general-purpose audio format, and support outside TechSmith software is limited. A TREC file may also contain several audio sources that Camtasia mixes during export.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container commonly used for compressed audio. Ogg Vorbis is the conventional codec for .ogg files; it provides lossy compression, broad support in open-source software, and useful quality at moderate bitrates. OGG is suitable for music, voice recordings, web audio, and applications that do not require a proprietary codec.

Choose OGG when the destination specifically accepts Vorbis or when you need a smaller audio file than uncompressed WAV. OGG is not an equivalent replacement for the original TREC recording because it normally contains audio only and discards screen video, cursor information, and editing data.

How to convert TREC to OGG

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

1. Open the .trec file in Camtasia.
2. If necessary, trim the recording and adjust the microphone or system-audio tracks.
3. Export a standard intermediate file through Share → Local File → MP4. Enable audio in the export settings and save it as recording.mp4.
4. Install FFmpeg, then run this command in the directory containing the exported file:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 recording.ogg

The -vn option removes video, while -c:a libvorbis selects Ogg Vorbis. FFmpeg's -q:a 5 setting provides a moderate-quality encode; use values from 0 to 10, with higher values producing larger files and generally better quality.

If the TREC is recognized by your installed FFmpeg build, you can try direct extraction with ffmpeg -i recording.trec -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 recording.ogg. Camtasia export is the more reliable route because TREC support varies by software version and file contents.

Converting without installed software

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the TREC file if the service accepts that recording version, select OGG as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. If TREC is rejected, export an MP4 from Camtasia first and convert that file instead.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion cannot restore audio quality already lost during the original recording or MP4 export. Keep the Camtasia project and original TREC file if you may need to change the mix or export at another quality later.

For speech, Vorbis quality 4 to 6 is usually sufficient. For music or high-fidelity source audio, use -q:a 7 or higher. If the receiving application supports Ogg Opus rather than Vorbis, use ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 96k recording.ogg; do not use this variant when the application explicitly requires Vorbis.

Check the exported file with a player such as VLC or FFplay. Some older hardware and browser integrations accept WAV or MP3 but do not decode OGG, so verify the target application's supported codecs before deleting the source.
