AUD files encountered in older Westwood Studios games are not widely supported by modern players or editors. Converting them to OGG makes the audio easier to play, share, and store at a smaller size.

What the AUD format is

AUD is a proprietary audio format created by Westwood Studios for game sound effects, music, and voice recordings. It is associated with games such as Command & Conquer, Red Alert, and other Westwood titles from the 1990s.

AUD files commonly contain Westwood ADPCM audio rather than a standard audio stream that general-purpose applications recognize. You may find them inside extracted game resource folders or in archives from older PC games. Their exact sample rate, channel count, and compression variant depend on the game that created them.

What the OGG format is

OGG usually contains Vorbis audio, although the Ogg container can also hold codecs such as Opus. Ogg Vorbis is a lossy format intended for music, speech, and game audio distribution.

Compared with uncompressed WAV, OGG normally produces much smaller files at similar listening quality. It is supported by VLC, foobar2000, many media players, game engines, and audio editors, but some older hardware and software only support MP3 or WAV.

How to convert AUD to OGG

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert an AUD file to OGG without installing software:

  1. Open the AUD-to-OGG conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or upload the .aud file.
  3. Choose OGG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .ogg file after processing finishes.

For local batch conversion, use a current FFmpeg build with Westwood AUD demuxer support:

ffmpeg -i input.aud -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

The -q:a 5 setting uses variable-bitrate Vorbis encoding at a moderate-to-high quality. Use values from 0 to 10; higher values generally produce larger files. If the FFmpeg build does not recognize AUD directly, decode the file with a Westwood AUD utility such as Aud2WAV, save it as input.wav, then run:

ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

Do not rename .aud to .ogg; changing the extension does not change the encoded audio.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The conversion first decodes the AUD audio and then encodes it with Vorbis, so it is a lossy-to-lossy conversion when the source uses compressed AUD audio. A higher OGG quality setting cannot restore detail already absent from the AUD source.

Keep the original AUD file for archival use. Test the OGG file in the application that will use it, because some programs accept the Ogg container only with Vorbis or Opus audio and may reject other codecs. If the target software requires a specific sample rate or mono output, resample during conversion, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.aud -ar 44100 -ac 1 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg
