OMG audio files are usually Sony OpenMG recordings containing ATRAC audio, often created or managed by SonicStage. Conversion is needed when a player, editor, or media library accepts OGG but cannot open Sony’s proprietary container or its ATRAC encoding.

What the OMG format is

In the audio context, .omg identifies Sony OpenMG music files, commonly associated with ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus audio and Sony SonicStage. OpenMG was used for music downloaded to or managed on Sony Network Walkman devices and other Sony software.

Many OMG files are protected by OpenMG digital rights management. A protected file may be playable only through the authorized SonicStage installation and cannot be decoded by a general-purpose converter. Changing the filename extension does not remove encryption or convert the audio.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container most commonly used for Vorbis audio, although it can also contain Opus and other codecs. OGG Vorbis provides lossy compression, wide support in desktop players and open-source software, and smaller files than uncompressed WAV at comparable listening quality.

Use OGG when the destination application supports Vorbis, when you need a broadly supported compressed file without Sony’s proprietary restrictions, or when reducing storage and transfer size matters. Check the target device first because some hardware supports MP3 or AAC but not OGG.

How to actually convert OMG to OGG

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the OMG-to-OGG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the .omg file and choose OGG as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .ogg file when processing finishes.
  4. Play the output in a Vorbis-capable application and check its duration, metadata, and volume.

This method works only when the OMG file is readable by the converter. Protected OpenMG files may be rejected because the service cannot access their decrypted audio.

Using FFmpeg for an unprotected or supported file

If FFmpeg recognizes the file’s container and codec, run:

ffmpeg -i input.omg -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg

The -q:a 5 setting produces a medium-to-high Vorbis quality level; use a lower value for smaller files or a higher value such as 7 for larger files. If FFmpeg reports an unknown format, unsupported codec, or encryption, it cannot perform a direct conversion.

When the file is DRM-protected

Open the file in the authorized Sony software and use an officially permitted export option if available. If no digital export is allowed, SonicStage can sometimes burn the track to an audio CD; ripping that CD to WAV creates a new, unprotected source that can then be encoded with the FFmpeg command above. Use this method only for audio you are authorized to copy.

Quality and compatibility limitations

ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus are already lossy codecs, so converting them to Vorbis is a second lossy encode. Do not expect the OGG file to recover detail discarded during the original ATRAC encoding; retaining the original OMG file or exporting to WAV first preserves the best available source.

OGG files do not necessarily contain the same tags as the source. Verify artist, album, title, track number, and cover art after conversion. If a player requires Opus or another codec inside an OGG container, Vorbis output may still be incompatible even though the filename ends in .ogg.
