An OMG audio file may be locked to Sony software or devices, while FLAC is accepted by modern players, editors, and archive tools. Converting it is usually needed to preserve access to a Sony ATRAC recording after discontinuing SonicStage or to use the recording in software that cannot read OpenMG.

What the OMG format is

In the Audio category, .omg normally identifies Sony OpenMG audio, an ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus-based format associated with SonicStage and OpenMG Jukebox. You may encounter OMG files in music libraries created for Sony Network Walkman players, MiniDisc-related software, and other Sony hardware from the 2000s.

Many OMG files contain OpenMG DRM. The filename extension alone does not show whether a file is protected, and changing .omg to .flac does not convert the audio.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is an open, lossless audio format supported by media players, music servers, editing applications, and archival workflows. It reduces the size of uncompressed PCM audio while retaining every sample, and it supports tags such as artist, album, title, and track number.

FLAC is useful when you need a format that is easier to archive, tag, back up, or import than Sony's OpenMG files. It cannot restore quality already discarded by ATRAC compression: an ATRAC3-to-FLAC conversion produces a lossless copy of the decoded ATRAC signal, not the original CD-quality data.

How to convert OMG to FLAC

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the OMG-to-FLAC converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Choose the OMG file, select FLAC as the output format, and start the conversion.
  3. Download the resulting .flac file and test it in your intended player.

A protected OpenMG file may be rejected because its audio is encrypted or because the service cannot obtain playback authorization. Do not upload files whose licensing or privacy terms prohibit online processing.

Using Sony software and an audio CD

  1. Open the library in SonicStage or OpenMG Jukebox on the computer that is authorized to play the OMG files.
  2. Use Burn CD or the equivalent disc-creation command and choose a standard Audio CD, not a data disc containing OMG files. DRM may limit the number of permitted burns.
  3. Rip the completed disc with a CD application such as Exact Audio Copy, fre:ac, or foobar2000, selecting FLAC output.
  4. Use a secure rip mode when available, confirm the disc reads without errors, and edit the FLAC tags after ripping.

If the Sony application provides an authorized Export or Convert to WAV command for a particular track, export to WAV first and encode that WAV as FLAC with a current audio tool. A command-line example is ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a flac output.flac. FFmpeg generally cannot bypass OpenMG DRM merely by being given the OMG filename.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Direct conversion preserves only the decoded ATRAC quality. Ripping through an Audio CD adds another digital conversion but normally avoids analog recording; use the highest permitted burn quality and verify the rip. If the source was originally CD audio, the recovered FLAC may still be lower quality than the original because ATRAC compression was lossy.

OpenMG authorization can depend on the original SonicStage installation, account, hardware, and transfer or burn permissions. Keep the original OMG files and their metadata until the FLAC files have been checked; a failed conversion cannot be reversed by renaming extensions.
