MSF audio files usually come from a proprietary recorder, music application, or project format, while FLAC is accepted by most modern players and editing tools. Conversion is needed when the original software cannot open the file elsewhere or when you need lossless audio for editing, archiving, or sharing.

What the MSF format is

MSF is not a single universally standardized audio format. The extension is used by different audio programs and devices for proprietary recordings, project data, or packaged audio. The creating application determines whether an MSF file contains directly readable PCM audio, compressed audio, metadata, or only references to separate source files.

You can usually identify the source from the file’s folder, its download or recording device, the program that created it, or the file properties. Renaming .msf to .flac does not convert the audio and can make file identification more difficult.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is an open, lossless audio codec stored in a standard container. It reduces file size without discarding audio samples, preserves the source’s bit depth and sample rate, supports tags such as artist and album, and is supported by many players, audio editors, media servers, and archival tools.

FLAC is suitable when you need smaller files than WAV or AIFF but must retain the original decoded audio. It cannot restore quality already lost in a lossy MSF source.

How to convert MSF to FLAC

The correct method depends on whether the MSF file contains a recognized audio stream.

  1. Make a backup of the original file and keep it unchanged.
  2. Try the built-in converter on 101convert.com. Upload the MSF file, select FLAC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. This option requires no installed software.
  3. For a local conversion, inspect the file with FFmpeg using ffprobe input.msf. If FFmpeg reports an audio stream, convert it with ffmpeg -i input.msf -map 0:a:0 -c:a flac output.flac.
  4. If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or no audio stream, open the file in the application or device software that created it. Use a command such as File → Open → Export, Save as, or Export audio, choose WAV or AIFF if FLAC is unavailable, then encode that exported file with ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a flac output.flac.
  5. Play the FLAC output and compare its duration, channel count, sample rate, and beginning and end points with the source. Add metadata with a tag editor if the source program did not export it.

Quality and compatibility limitations

FLAC encoding is lossless only from the decoder’s input. If the MSF source is lossy, damaged, encrypted, or dependent on external project files, the FLAC will preserve only the audio that the original software can decode.

FFmpeg cannot convert every file that uses the .msf extension because the extension alone does not identify a codec. A proprietary MSF project may need its original application before any standard audio encoder can process it. Preserve the original MSF and exported source files because FLAC may omit proprietary markers, edit history, playlists, or device-specific metadata.
