OPUS is required by many modern voice, streaming, and WebRTC applications because it provides small files with good speech and music quality. Converting an MSF file may require exporting it from the program that created it first, because MSF is not one universally standardized audio format.

What the MSF format is

In the Audio category, MSF is an ambiguous, usually proprietary audio or audio-project extension; different applications can use it for different internal containers, recordings, or editing projects. There is no single MSF codec that every converter can decode, and the extension alone does not identify the sample rate, codec, channel layout, or metadata structure.

You normally encounter an MSF file alongside the application, recorder, or project folder that created it. Open it with that original program and look for an export or bounce function. If the file is a multitrack project, MSF may contain references to source recordings rather than a self-contained waveform, so keep the associated media files in their original locations.

What the OPUS format is

OPUS is an open, lossy audio codec commonly stored in an Ogg-based file with the .opus extension. It supports speech and music, mono and multichannel audio, and sample rates up to 48 kHz.

OPUS generally produces smaller files than uncompressed WAV while retaining good quality at moderate bitrates. Typical settings are 32–64 kbit/s for speech, 64–96 kbit/s for mixed voice, and 96–160 kbit/s for music. It is suitable for web delivery, voice chat, podcasts, and archival copies where lossy compression is acceptable.

How to convert MSF to OPUS

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the MSF-to-OPUS converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the MSF file and choose OPUS as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .opus file.

If the service cannot read the MSF file, the file is probably a proprietary project or an MSF variant without supported decoding. Export it with the original application first.

Export with the source application, then encode with FFmpeg

  1. Open the file in the program that created it.
  2. Use File → Export, File → Render, or File → Bounce and select PCM WAV, preferably 16-bit or 24-bit WAV.
  3. Encode the exported file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i exported.wav -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.opus

For speech, replace 96k with 48k or 64k; for higher-quality music, use 128k or 160k. To inspect a file before conversion, run ffprobe input.msf. If FFmpeg reports an unknown or invalid input format, it cannot decode that MSF variant directly.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OPUS encoding is lossy: it cannot restore detail already removed from the MSF source. Exporting to WAV before encoding avoids an unnecessary intermediate lossy conversion when the source application can provide PCM audio.

Keep the original MSF file and the exported WAV if you may need further editing. Some MSF project files contain multiple tracks, effects, markers, or linked samples that a simple OPUS file cannot preserve; OPUS stores a final audio stream, not an editable project. Test the result in the intended player or device because older software may not support OPUS even though current browsers and media applications generally do.
