How to perform the conversion

1. Install FFmpeg if it is not already available on your system.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.mpeg -c:a libopus output.opus.
4. If your source is a video file and you only want the audio, FFmpeg will automatically extract the audio stream when you specify -c:a libopus.
5. For speech-focused audio, you can optionally set a lower bitrate, for example ffmpeg -i input.mpeg -c:a libopus -b:a 48k output.opus.

Notes on quality, compatibility, and limitations

Opus is a lossy format, so the conversion will not preserve the original audio perfectly. If the MPEG source is already compressed, re-encoding will reduce quality somewhat, though Opus usually minimizes the loss very well. For best results, start from the highest-quality source available.

If the MPEG file contains video, converting to Opus will keep only the audio and discard the video stream. That is normal for this conversion. Also note that some older players and hardware devices do not support Opus, so compatibility may be lower than with MP3 or AAC. For modern software, browsers, and streaming tools, however, Opus is an excellent choice.
