Games, chat systems, and publishing tools may require a .opus file instead of Vorbis audio in an .ogg file. Opus can also reduce the size of speech and music files when the receiving player supports it.
Ogg and Opus formats
Ogg is a free container format maintained by Xiph.Org. A file with the .ogg extension commonly contains Vorbis audio, but Ogg can also carry Opus, FLAC, Speex, and other streams.
Vorbis-in-Ogg is common in Linux and open-source software, older game assets, internet-radio tools, and audio exports labelled Ogg Vorbis. The .ogg extension alone does not identify the codec inside the file.
Opus is a royalty-free audio codec standardized by the IETF for efficient speech, music, and low-delay communication. A normal .opus file contains an Opus stream in an Ogg container, using the Ogg Opus mapping defined for this file type.
Opus is used by WebRTC applications, Discord, browsers, and voice services. It is particularly efficient for speech at low bitrates and usually provides good results for music at moderate bitrates. Mono speech commonly uses 24–48 kbps; stereo music commonly uses 96–160 kbps.
Convert an Ogg file to Opus
For a single file, upload the source to the converter on 101convert.com, select OPUS as the output format, start conversion, and download the resulting .opus file. This performs the conversion without installing software.
Do not change audio.ogg to audio.opus in a file manager when the source contains Vorbis. Renaming changes only the filename, not the encoded audio.
For local conversion, use an FFmpeg build that includes the libopus encoder. In a terminal opened in the source folder, run:
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.opus
This decodes the source stream and creates a new Opus file at 128 kbps. Use a lower bitrate for mono voice recordings:
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a libopus -ac 1 -b:a 32k output.opus
Use a higher bitrate for stereo music when preserving detail matters more than file size:
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a libopus -b:a 160k output.opus
Audacity is suitable when the audio also needs editing. Open the file, make any trims or level changes, then select File → Export Audio, choose Opus (OggOpus), set the bitrate, and save with the .opus extension.
Check the source codec first
An .ogg file may already contain Opus. Check it with VLC through Tools → Codec Information, or use:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams a:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name -of default=nw=1 input.ogg
If the result is opus, avoid lossy re-encoding. Create a correctly named copy with FFmpeg instead:
ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c copy output.opus
This copies the existing Opus stream without changing audio quality. Confirm that the destination program accepts the resulting file before replacing the original.
Quality and compatibility limits
Converting Vorbis to Opus is a lossy-to-lossy conversion. Opus cannot restore detail removed by the original Vorbis encoding, and encoding a poor source at a higher bitrate does not improve it. Keep the original file for editing, archival, or later conversion.
Select bitrate according to the content and target use rather than the source bitrate. A 32 kbps Opus file can be suitable for voice but will usually damage full-range stereo music; 128 kbps is a practical general starting point for stereo audio.
Opus encoders accept common input sample rates and resample when necessary; Ogg Opus timing is defined on a 48 kHz clock. Preserve the original channel count unless the target requires mono, because downmixing stereo permanently removes channel separation.
Compatibility depends on the receiving software, not just the extension. Some programs that request an .ogg file specifically require Vorbis-in-Ogg and cannot decode Opus, while older hardware players and some editors support Vorbis but not .opus.
