An OMA file is usually required for older Sony Network Walkman players and software such as SonicStage or OpenMG. Converting an OGG recording can make it usable in that Sony ecosystem, but OMA support is limited because the format commonly contains ATRAC audio and may include proprietary DRM.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container most commonly used for Vorbis or Opus compressed audio. It is created by applications such as Audacity, VLC, game engines, media players, and audio recorders, and is common in open-source software because the container and several associated codecs are royalty-free.

An .ogg file may contain Vorbis, Opus, FLAC, or another supported stream, so the filename alone does not identify the exact codec. Most older Sony audio devices do not accept OGG directly.

What the OMA format is

OMA is Sony's OpenMG audio container, associated mainly with ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus audio and older Sony music-management software. It was used by SonicStage, OpenMG Jukebox, and Network Walkman devices.

OMA can provide the codec and metadata structure expected by compatible Sony hardware, but it is not a general-purpose format for modern players. Some OMA files are protected by OpenMG DRM; protected files may only play on an authorized computer or device and cannot be freely edited or copied.

How to actually convert OGG to OMA

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the OGG-to-OMA converter on 101convert.com; it runs in a browser without installing software.
  2. Select the source file with the .ogg extension.
  3. Choose OMA as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting file and test it in SonicStage or on the target Sony device. If the converter offers ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus settings, choose the codec and bitrate supported by that device.

Do not upload copyrighted or confidential recordings to an online converter. If the service cannot create a compatible OMA file, use Sony software with an unprotected intermediate file instead.

Use Sony software for device-specific OMA files

SonicStage or OpenMG Jukebox is the most appropriate desktop route when the destination is an older Sony player. These applications can create device-specific ATRAC/OpenMG files, but their installers are discontinued and compatibility with current operating systems is limited.

  1. Convert the OGG source to uncompressed PCM WAV with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 44100 -ac 2 output.wav

  1. Import output.wav into SonicStage using its library import command.
  2. Set the ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus bitrate required by the player, then transfer or check out the track to the connected device. SonicStage creates the associated OpenMG/OMA file during that process.

FFmpeg is useful for decoding OGG and producing the WAV intermediate, but it is not a reliable standalone OMA writer. Renaming output.ogg to output.oma does not convert the audio or create the required OpenMG structure.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Vorbis and Opus are lossy codecs, and ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus is also generally lossy. Converting OGG to OMA therefore cannot restore discarded detail and may apply a second lossy encoding step. Use the highest source quality available and avoid repeated conversions; a WAV intermediate prevents an additional loss during the handoff to Sony software but does not restore the original OGG data.

OMA metadata, album art, gapless playback, and DRM status may change during conversion. A newly created unprotected OMA file may still fail on a player that accepts only files transferred through SonicStage, while DRM-protected source files may be impossible to convert outside their authorized software.
