AIFF files are often too large for Sony devices and software that expects the OMA container used by OpenMG and ATRAC-based players. Converting the audio creates a smaller, Sony-compatible file, although current devices and applications may no longer support OMA.

What the AIFF format is

AIFF, or Audio Interchange File Format, is an audio container developed by Apple and commonly used for uncompressed PCM recordings. It preserves the source samples without lossy compression, but produces much larger files than ATRAC, AAC, or MP3 at comparable playback settings.

AIFF appears in projects created by Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Audacity, GarageBand, and other recording or editing applications. It is used for mastering, editing, sound effects, and archiving, particularly on macOS. An AIFF file may also contain compressed audio, but standard AIFF used in production is usually linear PCM.

What the OMA format is

OMA is the Sony OpenMG Audio container associated with SonicStage, OpenMG Jukebox, Sony Network Walkman players, and some MiniDisc workflows. Its contents commonly use Sony ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus compression; some OMA files contain other codecs supported by Sony software.

ATRAC compression makes files considerably smaller than uncompressed AIFF while retaining the codec and bitrate selected during conversion. OMA is useful when a legacy Sony player, SonicStage library, or OpenMG-based application specifically requires it. The extension does not guarantee one universal audio codec, so the target device's supported ATRAC profile and bitrate must be checked.

How to actually convert AIFF to OMA

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the AIFF-to-OMA converter on 101convert.com; the site can convert the file for free without installing software.
  2. Choose the source .aiff file and select OMA as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .oma file when processing finishes.
  4. Test the file in the intended Sony application or on the target player before converting a large collection.

If the converter exposes codec settings, select ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus and use a bitrate supported by the destination device. If it offers no codec controls, the generated OMA profile may not work with older hardware that accepts only a particular ATRAC variant.

Using Sony software locally

SonicStage or OpenMG Jukebox is the most device-specific local option when it is still available and compatible with the operating system. Import the AIFF through File → Import or the program's library-import command, configure the transfer or encoding profile for ATRAC3/ATRAC3plus, then export or transfer the track to create the managed OMA copy. Menu names and AIFF support differ between releases; some versions require converting AIFF to WAV first.

When AIFF import fails, create an intermediate PCM WAV with a tool such as FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.aiff -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 44100 intermediate.wav

Import intermediate.wav into the Sony application. This command does not create OMA; it only supplies a broadly compatible source for software that performs the Sony ATRAC/OpenMG encoding.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AIFF-to-OMA conversion is normally lossy because ATRAC encoding discards information. Keep the original AIFF as the archival master, and avoid repeatedly transcoding an already compressed file. Converting to a higher ATRAC bitrate cannot restore detail removed by an earlier encode.

OMA files may be DRM-managed or tied to an OpenMG database rather than being freely portable audio files. A file can therefore play in SonicStage but fail in a generic media player or on a newer Sony product. Modern FFmpeg builds commonly decode some OMA/ATRAC files, but FFmpeg is not a dependable standalone OMA encoder, so renaming an AIFF file or changing its container extension will not produce a valid result.
