What the WMA format is
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is Microsoft's compressed audio format, commonly created by Windows Media Player, older Windows recording software, and music-management applications. It supports lossy WMA profiles and WMA Lossless, although device compatibility varies and DRM-protected WMA files may not be convertible.
What the OMA format is
OMA is Sony's OpenMG audio container, used mainly by SonicStage and older Sony Network Walkman, MiniDisc, and ATRAC-compatible devices. An OMA file commonly contains ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, or linear PCM audio; the extension alone does not identify the exact codec or whether OpenMG encryption is present.
OMA was useful for Sony hardware and legacy music libraries because it carried Sony-specific metadata and, in some workflows, digital-rights controls. It is not a broadly supported interchange format, so choose it only when the target Sony software or device explicitly requires it.
How to convert WMA to OMA
Using the online converter
- Open the converter on 101convert.com; it runs without installing software.
- Upload the source
.wmafile. - Set the output format to
OMA. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.omafile when processing finishes. - Test the file in the intended Sony application or device before converting a large collection.
Using legacy Sony software
For an OMA file that must work with OpenMG, install a compatible SonicStage release on a supported Windows system, then use File → Import or File → Add File to add the WMA recording. Select the ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus encoding setting, then transfer or export it through the application's device or library workflow. Exact menu names and WMA support depend on the SonicStage version; some releases accept only unprotected WMA files.
If the Sony software cannot read the WMA, decode it to an uncompressed intermediate with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.wma -c:a pcm_s16le intermediate.wav
Import intermediate.wav into compatible SonicStage/OpenMG software and select the required ATRAC profile. FFmpeg can decode many WMA variants but generally does not author Sony OpenMG OMA files directly.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Converting lossy WMA to ATRAC usually performs a second lossy encode; it cannot restore detail removed by the original compression. Use the original WMA Lossless file, if available, or a WAV intermediate as the source, and select the highest bitrate supported by the target device.
Copy-protected WMA files may be restricted to the software and account that authorized them. A newly created OMA file may still fail on hardware that expects encrypted OpenMG files, a particular ATRAC bitrate, or device-specific transfer authorization. Confirm codec, bitrate, DRM status, and maximum supported file size in the Sony device documentation.
