Legacy Sony Walkman players, MiniDisc software, and SonicStage libraries may require audio in Sony’s OMA container instead of M4A. Converting is useful when the device rejects AAC or ALAC files and accepts only OpenMG/ATRAC tracks.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container, commonly carrying AAC audio and sometimes lossless ALAC audio. Apple Music and iTunes, QuickTime, smartphones, recording applications, and audio editors frequently create M4A files. The extension does not identify the codec by itself, so an M4A file may be lossy AAC or lossless ALAC.

What the OMA format is

OMA is Sony’s OpenMG audio container, normally associated with ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, or ATRAC Advanced Lossless audio. SonicStage and older Sony Walkman and MiniDisc systems used OMA files for local playback and device transfers.

OMA is useful only when the target Sony software or hardware specifically requires it. Some OMA files contain OpenMG DRM or device-specific protection; those files cannot be treated as ordinary, freely editable audio.

  2. Upload the M4A file and choose OMA as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting OMA file.
  4. Test the file in SonicStage or on the intended Sony device before converting a large collection.

Using a desktop workflow for Sony software

When a direct OMA encoder is unavailable, create an uncompressed intermediate file and encode it through compatible Sony software:

  1. Decode the M4A to a WAV file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 44100 -ac 2 output.wav

  1. Import output.wav into SonicStage or another Sony application that supports ATRAC encoding.
  2. Choose the required ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus bitrate in the application’s import or transfer settings.
  3. Use File → Import or the application’s device-transfer command, then allow it to create the OMA track.

The exact menu names and supported bitrates vary by SonicStage release and Sony device. If the application accepts AAC M4A directly, the WAV step may be unnecessary; WAV is the safer compatibility path.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Converting AAC or ALAC to ATRAC is not lossless unless the source and target codecs are both lossless. AAC-to-ATRAC conversion re-encodes already compressed audio and can reduce quality, so retain the original M4A as an archive.

Use a source sample rate and channel layout supported by the target Sony system, commonly stereo 44.1 kHz. A file that converts successfully may still fail on a player because of firmware limits, unsupported ATRAC profiles, transfer authentication, or OpenMG DRM requirements.

OMA is not a general-purpose editing format. For editing, normalize, trim, or tag the audio before the final ATRAC/OMA conversion, and keep a WAV or original M4A working copy.
