What the OPUS format is
OPUS is a lossy audio codec designed for speech and music at low bitrates. It is commonly stored in .opus files or inside Ogg and WebM containers. Web browsers, Discord, WhatsApp, VoIP applications, screen recorders, and some audio tools create or handle OPUS files.
OPUS supports variable bitrates and is efficient for voice, but older Sony hardware and OpenMG software generally do not support it directly.
What the OMA format is
OMA is a Sony OpenMG audio container associated primarily with ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus files created by SonicStage, Sony CONNECT, and related Sony music-management software. It was used for transferring music to older Sony Walkman devices and other ATRAC-compatible players.
OMA compatibility depends on the audio codec inside the container and, for some files, on OpenMG DRM. A file with an .oma extension is not automatically playable on every Sony device; many newer players support neither OMA nor ATRAC.
How to convert OPUS to OMA
The built-in converter at 101convert.com can convert an OPUS file to OMA without installing desktop software:
- Open the Audio conversion page on 101convert.com.
- Choose
.opusas the input format and upload the file. - Select
.omaas the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
- Test the file in the intended Sony software or device before deleting the original.
If the converter does not offer OMA output or the resulting file is rejected, use a two-stage workflow: decode OPUS to an uncompressed .wav file with FFmpeg, then import that WAV into Sony SonicStage or another ATRAC/OpenMG-compatible desktop tool and select an ATRAC output option. A typical intermediate command is:
ffmpeg -i input.opus -c:a pcm_s16le intermediate.wav
FFmpeg can create the WAV intermediate, but standard FFmpeg builds generally do not provide a complete OpenMG/OMA encoder. Renaming an OPUS file to .oma does not convert it.
Quality and compatibility limitations
OPUS to OMA is normally a lossy-to-lossy transcode. Use a high enough ATRAC bitrate for the intended music or speech, and keep the original OPUS file as the source archive; converting first to MP3 or another lossy format adds another generation of quality loss.
OMA files produced without Sony OpenMG authorization may play in software but fail on a DRM-restricted Walkman. For device transfer, the destination player must support both the OMA container and the particular ATRAC profile, bitrate, and sample rate used during encoding.
