Sony ATRAC-compatible players and legacy SonicStage libraries may require AA3 instead of OPUS. Converting is also useful when an audio editor or device accepts ATRAC3 files but cannot open the newer OPUS codec.

What the OPUS format is

OPUS is a lossy audio codec designed for speech and music, commonly stored in files with the .opus extension. WebRTC applications, browsers, voice-chat software, screen recorders, and some audio editors create OPUS files; Ogg containers are the most common storage format. OPUS supports low-delay voice at low bitrates and higher-quality music at substantially higher bitrates.

What the AA3 format is

AA3 is associated with Sony ATRAC3 audio, particularly files used by SonicStage and older Sony Network Walkman, MiniDisc, and related software or hardware. ATRAC3 provides compressed audio that suits those legacy devices, but AA3 has much narrower modern support than OPUS, MP3, or AAC. Some Sony files also use OpenMG protection; a protected file may not be convertible unless the protection is removed through the software that created it.

How to actually convert OPUS to AA3

  1. Open the converter on 101convert.com; it runs in a web browser and does not require installed software.
  2. Upload the .opus file and select AA3 or Sony ATRAC3 as the output format.
  3. Choose the available ATRAC3 quality or bitrate. Use a stereo setting and a sample rate supported by the target Sony device; 44.1 kHz is the safest choice for music when offered.
  4. Start the conversion, then download the resulting file and test it in the intended Sony application or device. Keep the original OPUS file because conversion does not preserve the original compressed audio data.

For a local workflow, first decode OPUS to an intermediate PCM file with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.opus -c:a pcm_s16le intermediate.wav

Then open intermediate.wav in software that explicitly supports Sony ATRAC3/AA3 export and use its File → Export or Save as command. FFmpeg installations commonly decode OPUS but may produce an ATRAC3-in-OMA file rather than a Sony-compatible .aa3 file, so changing the extension is not a valid conversion.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OPUS and ATRAC3 are both lossy codecs. Decoding OPUS and encoding ATRAC3 causes a second generation of compression; increasing the AA3 bitrate cannot restore details already discarded by the OPUS encoding. Use the highest supported ATRAC3 quality when sound quality matters.

AA3 compatibility depends on the exact container, ATRAC3 profile, sample rate, bitrate, metadata, and DRM state. A file that plays in a general audio player may still be rejected by an older Sony device, while a protected SonicStage file may be restricted to its original account or library. Verify the converted file on the actual target hardware before deleting the source.
