Programs such as SoundFont-compatible samplers, MIDI workstations, and some hardware synthesizers require SF2 rather than a compressed song file. Converting an M4A therefore means decoding it to PCM audio and packaging that audio as a mapped SoundFont instrument, not simply changing the filename extension.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container commonly used for AAC-compressed audio and, less commonly, lossless ALAC audio. Music stores, phones, Apple applications, media players, and voice-recording software commonly create or distribute M4A files. The container can hold metadata such as artist, album, and cover art, but it does not contain the instrument zones, key ranges, or MIDI behavior required by an SF2 sound bank.

What the SF2 format is

SF2, also called SoundFont 2, is a sample-based synthesizer format. It stores PCM samples together with presets, instruments, key and velocity ranges, tuning, envelopes, filters, and optional loop points. A sampler loads an SF2 preset and plays its samples in response to MIDI notes.

SF2 is useful when a sampler or synthesizer accepts SoundFonts but not M4A. Its main advantage is that one bank can define playable instruments from one or many samples. An M4A recording of a complete song usually becomes a single long, one-shot sample; it does not automatically become a chromatic instrument with separate notes.

How to actually convert M4A to SF2

Prepare a WAV sample with FFmpeg

Decode the M4A to uncompressed PCM WAV before importing it into a SoundFont editor. For broad compatibility, use 16-bit mono WAV at 44.1 kHz:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -vn -ac 1 -ar 44100 -sample_fmt s16 output.wav

Use a short, clean note or phrase when creating an instrument. If the source is a full song, trim it first; importing the entire recording produces a large one-shot preset rather than a normally playable musical instrument.

Create the SoundFont in Polyphone

  1. Install and open Polyphone, then choose File → New to create an SF2 project.
  2. Import output.wav into the project's samples section. Polyphone can generally read standard PCM WAV files; avoid MP3 or M4A samples at this stage.
  3. Create an instrument and add the imported sample to an instrument zone.
  4. Set the sample's original or root key to the pitch at which the recording was made. For example, a sample recorded at C4 should use MIDI note 60 as its root key.
  5. Set the key range. For a single-note sample, restrict the range to the notes where transposition remains acceptable; for a one-shot recording, use the intended trigger range and disable looping.
  6. Adjust tuning, attenuation, velocity range, envelope, and loop points if needed. A sustained instrument normally requires a loop with clean zero-crossing boundaries; a song or sound effect normally remains one-shot.
  7. Create a preset, assign the instrument to it, provide a bank and preset number, then export or save the project as output.sf2.

Test output.sf2 in a SoundFont player such as MuseScore, FluidSynth, a DAW sampler, or the target hardware. Polyphone menu names can vary slightly by version, but the required structure is always sample → instrument zone → preset.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Lossy AAC data in an M4A cannot be restored by conversion. Decode from ALAC or another lossless source when available, and avoid repeated lossy exports. Converting a stereo source to mono reduces size and matches the requirements of many SoundFont players, but it removes stereo information.

SF2 files commonly use 16-bit PCM samples, although player support for sample rates, stereo zones, modulators, filters, and extended SoundFont features varies. A bank that loads in Polyphone may not behave identically in every synthesizer. SF2 also has no universal way to infer musical pitch, root note, loop boundaries, velocity layers, or instrument identity from an arbitrary M4A, so those properties must be supplied manually.
