An OGG file contains recorded or encoded audio, while RTTTL is text describing a simple ringtone melody. Conversion is needed when a phone, ringtone editor, or embedded device accepts RTTTL but the source melody is stored as an OGG recording.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container commonly holding Vorbis or Opus audio. Vorbis is used for music and voice files; Opus is common in speech, games, streaming, and communications. Applications such as VLC, Audacity, game engines, browsers, and media recorders can create or play OGG files. An OGG file stores sampled sound, not a list of musical notes, so converting it to RTTTL requires melody recognition or manual transcription.

What the RTTTL format is

RTTTL, or Ringing Tone Text Transfer Language, is a compact plain-text ringtone format associated with older mobile phones and simple ringtone software. It describes a monophonic sequence using note names, durations, octave numbers, tempo, and pauses, for example tone:d=4,o=5,b=120:c,e,g,p.

RTTTL files are very small and easy to edit, but they cannot preserve recorded vocals, chords, stereo effects, reverb, detailed timing, or the full sound of an OGG recording. They are suitable only when the desired result is a single-line ringtone melody supported by the target device or application.

How to actually convert OGG to RTTTL

For a quick result, use the converter on 101convert.com:

  1. Open the OGG-to-RTTTL converter page.
  2. Upload the .ogg file and select RTTTL as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .rtttl file.
  4. Open the output in a plain-text editor and check that it contains an RTTTL header followed by note data, rather than binary audio.

Automatic audio-to-melody conversion can miss notes, identify harmonies as separate melodies, or produce unusable results when the recording contains vocals, drums, chords, or background noise.

For a more controllable result, extract and edit the melody through MIDI:

  1. Trim the OGG in Audacity so the melody is as isolated as possible. Export a WAV copy with File → Export Audio; uncompressed WAV generally gives transcription software cleaner input than a repeatedly encoded OGG.
  2. Run an audio-to-MIDI tool such as Spotify Basic Pitch. After installing it with pip install basic-pitch, run basic-pitch midi-output song.wav. The command creates a MIDI transcription when the installed version supports the input file and command syntax.
  3. Open the MIDI file in MuseScore or another MIDI editor. Delete accompaniment, correct wrong pitches, quantize note lengths, set a single melody line, and keep the range within the target phone's supported octaves.
  4. Use a MIDI-to-RTTTL utility that supports the RTTTL dialect required by the destination device, or transcribe the corrected notes into a text file. A basic file has the form name:d=4,o=5,b=120:c,e,g,p; save it with an .rtttl extension.
  5. Transfer the file through the destination phone or application and test it there. Some devices require a specific name, character encoding, maximum length, or import directory.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This is a lossy format conversion in musical information, not a normal audio re-encoding. RTTTL cannot reproduce the original OGG waveform; it replaces the recording with approximate note events and relies on the receiving device's built-in ringtone instrument.

Results improve when the OGG contains one clearly audible melody with a steady tempo. Isolate a vocal or lead instrument, remove long silence, and avoid clipping before transcription. Polyphonic music usually needs manual reduction to one line.

RTTTL implementations differ. Common syntax uses d for default duration, o for default octave, b for beats per minute, note names a through g, optional sharp markers such as c#, and p for rests. Devices may reject dotted notes, unsupported octaves, long sequences, unusual tempo values, or note names outside their permitted range.
