Convert MP3 to RTTTL

RTTTL is required by some legacy phone ringtone systems, embedded projects, and software parsers that accept a compact melody string instead of audio. An MP3 must be reduced to a single-note tune before it can be represented in RTTTL.

MP3 and RTTTL are different kinds of data

MP3 is a lossy compressed audio format used for music downloads, podcasts, voice recordings, media players, and phone audio. It stores sampled sound, so it can contain vocals, drums, chords, stereo channels, effects, and multiple instruments at once.

RTTTL means Ringing Tone Text Transfer Language. It is a plain-text, monophonic ringtone notation associated with older Nokia-compatible ringtone systems. It stores note names, durations, octaves, rests, and tempo; it does not store a waveform, instrument sound, volume, or stereo audio.

An RTTTL string usually has the form name:d=4,o=5,b=120:8e,8g,8a,4g. The first section is the name, the second sets default duration, octave, and beats per minute, and the last section lists notes. Notes use a through g, optional sharps such as f#, octave values such as c6, dotted values, and p for a rest.

RTTTL files are extremely small and can be edited in any plain-text editor. Their limitation is fundamental: only one note or rest can play at a time.

Convert a melody, not a complete recording

A direct conversion of an arbitrary song usually produces unusable results. First isolate a short, recognizable melody, then transcribe that melody to MIDI or enter its notes manually.

1. Open the MP3 in Audacity, select a short melodic phrase, and use File → Export Audio to save a WAV file. If possible, use an instrumental section or an isolated vocal or lead-instrument track.
2. Convert the excerpt to mono if required by the transcription tool. FFmpeg can create a mono WAV with ffmpeg -i source.mp3 -ac 1 melody.wav.
3. Use Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch for audio-to-MIDI transcription. It is available as desktop Python software with pip install basic-pitch, then basic-pitch midi-out melody.wav. The official Basic Pitch web demo is a practical online option for short, non-sensitive clips; upload only audio you have permission to process.
4. Open the resulting MIDI in MuseScore. Remove drums, accompaniment, bass, duplicate notes, and chords until one staff contains the intended melody. Correct pitch and rhythm manually, set a suitable tempo, then export a standard MIDI file through File → Export.
5. Convert the cleaned, one-track MIDI with an RTTTL-capable MIDI converter. Open-source command-line tools commonly use a command similar to mid2rtttl melody.mid > melody.rtttl, but syntax and supported MIDI features vary by build; check its --help output. Online MIDI-to-RTTTL converters can be convenient for a cleaned MIDI file, but test their output and avoid uploading private recordings.
6. Open the resulting .rtttl file in a plain-text editor. Keep the text simple and test it in the exact target application or device.

For a short tune, manual transcription is often faster and more accurate than audio-to-MIDI processing. For example, alarm:d=8,o=5,b=120:8c,8e,8g,4c6 defines a short ascending melody. RTTTL editors and target-device ringtone editors can be useful for entering and auditioning these notes directly.

Compatibility and quality limits

Automatic transcription is least reliable for dense mixes, percussion, distorted guitars, reverb, overlapping instruments, and sung vocals with accompaniment. It detects estimated pitches rather than extracting an authoritative melody from the MP3.

RTTTL cannot preserve chords, drum patterns, lyrics, instrument timbre, effects, volume automation, or stereo separation. Reduce simultaneous MIDI notes to one melodic line before conversion; otherwise a converter may discard notes unpredictably.

RTTTL parsers are not fully uniform. Older implementations may limit ringtone-name length, accepted octaves, note durations, sharps, tempo ranges, or total string length. Use common durations such as 4, 8, and 16, keep the melody short, and avoid unusual octave ranges until the target parser has been tested.

Some targets accept an RTTTL string pasted into a field rather than a separate .rtttl file. Others require a particular encoding or import method, so consult the target application's documentation before transferring the file. Modern Android and iPhone ringtone workflows normally use audio formats instead—typically MP3 or AAC/M4R—rather than RTTTL.
