A phone, embedded device, or ringtone editor may require RTTTL text instead of a recorded FLAC track. The conversion is therefore a melody transcription: FLAC contains sampled audio, while RTTTL describes a simple sequence of ringtone notes.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC, or Free Lossless Audio Codec, stores compressed digital audio without discarding samples. It preserves the source waveform while using less space than uncompressed WAV, so it is common for music archives, CD rips, studio exports, and lossless downloads.

Programs including Audacity, foobar2000, Exact Audio Copy, media players, digital audio workstations, and command-line tools such as ffmpeg can create or export FLAC files. A FLAC file may contain a complete song, speech, or another complex recording rather than a separately stored melody.

What the RTTTL format is

RTTTL, short for Ring Tone Text Transfer Language, is a plain-text ringtone notation originally associated with Nokia mobile phones and compatible ringtone software. A typical entry contains a name, default duration, default octave, tempo, and a comma-separated note sequence:

Scale:d=4,o=5,b=120:c,d,e,f,g

RTTTL supports short monophonic melodies, rests, note durations, octaves, sharps, and dotted notes. Its small text representation is easy to copy, edit, archive, and transmit, but it cannot preserve vocals, chords, realistic instruments, stereo placement, or the full detail of a FLAC recording.

How to actually convert FLAC to RTTTL

This is normally a transcription rather than a direct audio codec conversion. Use the following workflow:

  1. Decode or inspect the FLAC. Open it in Audacity or another audio editor. If a WAV working copy is required, run ffmpeg -i input.flac output.wav.
  2. Isolate the usable melody. Trim the section to become the ringtone and listen for its lead tune. A dense recording may require a vocal or instrument stem, an equalizer, or a melody-only version; RTTTL cannot represent several independent parts reliably.
  3. Determine pitches and rhythm. Use Audacity’s spectrogram and playback controls, or inspect the recording in Sonic Visualiser with a suitable pitch-detection plugin. Write down each note, octave, duration, rest, and approximate tempo. Automatic pitch detection needs manual correction for vibrato, noise, harmony, and note attacks.
  4. Encode the notes as RTTTL. Enter the result in an RTTTL editor or a plain-text editor. For example, a short ascending phrase can be written as Scale:d=4,o=5,b=120:c,d,e,f,g. Use p for a rest, a duration before a note such as 8g, # for a sharp such as c#, and a trailing period for a dotted duration where the target device supports it.
  5. Save and test the file. Save the text as scale.rtttl or with the extension required by the receiving phone or editor. Use plain UTF-8 or ASCII text, avoid smart punctuation, and test the ringtone on the target software because RTTTL dialects differ.

For a quick automatic attempt, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Automatic output may fail when the FLAC contains several instruments, vocals, variable tempo, or an unclear melody; edit the generated RTTTL before transferring it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

FLAC quality does not translate into RTTTL quality because RTTTL does not contain audio samples. The result depends on the accuracy of the melody transcription, rhythm simplification, tempo selection, and the target device’s sound generator.

RTTTL implementations commonly limit notes to a narrow octave range, basic integer durations, one melodic line, and a restricted tempo range. Some accept sharps only in a particular syntax, ignore unsupported octave values, or reject dotted notes and long names. Keep the ringtone short, verify the device’s supported syntax, and audition the result after every major edit.
