How to convert ogg to wav file

  • Audio

Some audio editors, samplers, video applications, and older hardware accept WAV but not OGG. Converting produces a broadly compatible PCM file for editing or playback, but it cannot restore detail removed by lossy OGG encoding.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container, not a single audio codec. A file with an .ogg extension most commonly contains Vorbis audio, although Ogg containers can also hold Opus, FLAC, or Speex streams; Opus files commonly use the .opus extension.

Vorbis and Opus are lossy codecs that reduce file size for music, games, web applications, podcasts, and software playback. Ogg FLAC is lossless. Current versions of VLC, foobar2000, Audacity, browsers, and FFmpeg can decode the common Ogg variants.

What the WAV format is

WAV is usually a RIFF/WAVE container holding uncompressed linear PCM audio. It supports different sample rates, bit depths, channel counts, and channel layouts; 16-bit or 24-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz is common.

PCM WAV files provide predictable sample data and broad compatibility with editing software, video-production tools, sound-design applications, samplers, and hardware. They do not add another lossy-compression stage during editing, but they are much larger than OGG: stereo 16-bit audio at 44.1 kHz uses about 10.6 MB per minute.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com without installing software:

  1. Open the site's OGG-to-WAV converter.
  2. Select or upload the .ogg file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .wav file when processing finishes.

Play the downloaded file in the target application and verify its extension before deleting the source. Avoid uploading confidential audio to any service unless its handling and retention policies are acceptable.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can decode Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Opus, Ogg FLAC, and other supported streams. Run this command in a terminal:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

This writes 16-bit little-endian PCM while normally retaining the input sample rate and channel count. To create 24-bit stereo PCM at 48 kHz, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -ar 48000 -ac 2 -c:a pcm_s24le output.wav

Replace the input and output filenames as needed. FFmpeg decodes the compressed stream and writes new PCM samples; it does not copy the OGG stream into a WAV container.

Using Audacity

  1. Open Audacity and choose File → Import → Audio, then select the OGG file.
  2. Choose File → Export Audio.
  3. Select WAV, choose a PCM encoding such as 16-bit or 24-bit, set a filename ending in .wav, and confirm the export.

Set the project sample rate and channel configuration before export if the receiving application requires specific values. Audacity can decode common Vorbis and Opus files; a current FFmpeg build is a better choice when the Ogg file uses an unusual or unsupported codec.

Quality and compatibility limits

Decoding a lossy Vorbis or Opus file to WAV removes the compression layer but does not recover frequencies or detail discarded during encoding. Exporting that WAV to OGG again introduces another lossy-compression generation. Converting Ogg FLAC to PCM WAV does not lose source audio data, although the files use different containers and codecs.

Use 16-bit PCM for general compatibility and 24-bit PCM when a production workflow requests it. A higher WAV bit depth cannot create detail that was absent from the source. Leave the original sample rate and channel count unchanged unless the destination requires resampling or downmixing; changing either alters the audio data.

WAV can technically contain compressed audio, so confirm that the export uses PCM when an editor, sampler, or hardware device requires uncompressed audio. Tags, cover art, chapters, and other metadata may not transfer reliably; retain the original OGG if that information matters.
