Programs such as music players and archive systems require FLAC because it stores decoded audio rather than a song-project file. An NBS file must therefore be rendered or exported before it can become a playable FLAC file.

What the NBS format is

NBS usually means Note Block Studio, the binary song format used for Minecraft note-block compositions. Open Note Block Studio and older Note Block Studio releases create .nbs files, which store notes, instruments, timing, tempo, metadata, and other arrangement data rather than recorded waveform audio.

NBS files are commonly encountered in Minecraft music libraries and note-block projects. A normal audio converter cannot decode an NBS file as if it were WAV or MP3; the song must first be played through a synthesizer or Minecraft-compatible sound engine.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is a lossless compressed audio format. It reduces the size of PCM audio without discarding samples, supports metadata such as artist and album tags, and is accepted by many desktop players, media servers, archival tools, and audio editors.

How to actually convert NBS to FLAC

2. Choose the .nbs file as the input and select FLAC as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting FLAC file when processing finishes.

This method is suitable when the service supports the specific Note Block Studio variant. Check the resulting file by playing it from start to finish, because NBS is a project format and conversion requires musical rendering rather than direct audio transcoding.

Use Open Note Block Studio and a MIDI synthesizer

1. Open the file in Open Note Block Studio.
2. Choose File → Export → MIDI and save it as song.mid.
3. Install a General MIDI SoundFont, such as a legally redistributable GM soundfont, and save it as soundfont.sf2.
4. Render the MIDI to a temporary WAV file with FluidSynth:

fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 -F song.wav -r 44100 song.mid

5. Encode the WAV file as FLAC:

flac --best song.wav

The output will normally be song.flac. Delete song.wav only after checking the FLAC file and confirming that its duration, notes, and ending are correct.

Record the original playback

For Minecraft-specific instrument sounds, play the NBS arrangement in the intended Note Block Studio or Minecraft environment and record the system output with Audacity or another audio recorder. Export the recording as 16-bit or 24-bit WAV, then convert it with flac recording.wav. This preserves the rendered sound more accurately than MIDI export, but it also records latency, effects, volume changes, and background audio unless those are controlled.

Quality and compatibility limits

FLAC conversion cannot improve the source quality: an NBS file contains note instructions, not high-resolution audio. MIDI export can change instruments, expression, percussion mapping, note lengths, tempo behavior, or proprietary NBS effects because a General MIDI synthesizer does not reproduce Minecraft note-block samples exactly.

Use a sample rate such as 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz for rendered audio; changing the FLAC compression level affects file size and encoding time, not audio quality. Verify that the converter recognizes the file as Note Block Studio NBS, because the .nbs extension can represent unrelated formats in other software.
