What the MK3D format is

MK3D is a Matroska-based container for stereoscopic 3D video, usually identified by the .mk3d extension. It can contain video, one or more audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and metadata. Files are commonly created with Matroska tools such as MKVToolNix or produced by 3D video authoring and recording software. You may encounter them in archived 3D movies, camera exports, and media libraries.

The extension describes the container, not a single audio or video codec. An MK3D file may contain AAC, AC-3, DTS, Opus, Vorbis, or other audio formats, so the conversion method depends on the selected audio stream.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is a lossless audio codec and file format. It reduces PCM audio size without discarding audio data, then restores the original samples during playback. FLAC supports metadata such as artist, album, track title, and cover art, and is widely supported by music players, archival software, and audio editors.

Use FLAC when you need an editable or archival audio file and the source audio is uncompressed or lossless. Converting a lossy soundtrack such as AAC, AC-3, or MP3 to FLAC only changes the container and codec; it cannot recover information already removed by the lossy encoding.

How to convert an MK3D file to FLAC

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg can select an audio stream, discard the video, and encode the result as FLAC.

1. Install FFmpeg from the package manager or trusted distribution for your operating system.
2. Inspect the available audio streams with ffprobe -v error -select_streams a -show_entries stream=index,codec_name,channels,sample_rate:stream_tags=title -of default=nw=1 input.mk3d.
3. Convert the first audio stream with ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a flac output.flac. Replace 0:a:0 with the required stream selector if the file contains several audio tracks.
4. Open output.flac in a player or editor and verify its duration, channel count, and metadata.

The -vn option prevents video from being written, while -c:a flac uses lossless FLAC encoding. To preserve a source track that is already FLAC without re-encoding, use ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output.flac; this works only when the selected stream is compatible with a standalone FLAC file.
