Free online MK3D to WAV converter

A WAV-only audio editor or sampler cannot use the audio embedded in an MK3D video container directly. Extracting the audio stream with FFmpeg or 101convert.com creates a separate PCM WAV file without preserving the 3D video.

What the MK3D format is

MK3D is the Matroska 3D container format, normally identified by the .mk3d extension. It stores stereoscopic video, audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and 3D layout metadata in the same general container family as MKV.

MK3D files are commonly produced by MakeMKV, mkvmerge from MKVToolNix, FFmpeg-based workflows, and Blu-ray 3D backup or transcoding tools. You may encounter them when working with 3D movie archives or media players that separate 3D Matroska files from ordinary MKV files.

An MK3D file is not an audio format. The conversion therefore means audio extraction, not conversion of the 3D video into sound.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container that commonly stores uncompressed linear PCM. It is supported by digital audio workstations, sample editors, video editors, broadcast tools, and hardware players without requiring a compressed-audio decoder.

WAV preserves the decoded sample data without MP3- or AAC-style lossy compression, making it suitable for editing, mixing, mastering, and archival intermediates. The resulting file is substantially larger than the source audio when the MK3D contains compressed AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, or similar audio.

How to convert MK3D to WAV

Using FFmpeg

1. Install FFmpeg and place the MK3D file in a convenient folder.
2. Inspect the available streams with ffprobe -i input.mk3d. Look for audio entries such as Stream #0:1 and note the number of audio tracks.
3. Extract the first audio stream as 16-bit PCM WAV with ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav.
4. Replace 0:a:0 with 0:a:1 or another index to extract a different audio track.

The -vn option prevents video processing, -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and pcm_s16le creates standard little-endian 16-bit PCM. For 24-bit output, use -c:a pcm_s24le; for 32-bit PCM, use -c:a pcm_s32le.

If the source has multiple channels, FFmpeg retains the channel layout when the WAV format supports it. To force stereo output, use -ac 2, but this downmixes multichannel audio and cannot be reversed.

Using 101convert.com

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting compressed audio to WAV does not restore information removed by the original codec. It only decodes the existing track into uncompressed PCM, so choose the source audio track carefully when an MK3D contains commentary, multiple languages, or separate stereo and surround streams.

WAV files can become very large: uncompressed size is approximately sample_rate × channels × bytes_per_sample × duration. Standard RIFF WAV also has a practical size limit near 4 GB; long, high-resolution multichannel exports may require RF64 or a different target format.

If FFmpeg reports that the file contains no audio stream, the MK3D is video-only or damaged, and no WAV can be generated. If the output opens with the wrong channel arrangement, inspect the source layout with ffprobe and use an explicit filter or channel mapping rather than relying on automatic downmixing.
