Some older games and music tools store soundtrack data as XMI, while audio editors and DAWs generally require a rendered waveform such as WAV. Converting it requires playing the MIDI-based sequence through a synthesizer and recording the result as PCM audio.

What the XMI format is

XMI usually means Extended MIDI, an IFF-based music format used in DOS-era games and multimedia software. It stores musical events such as notes, instruments, tempo, controllers, and sometimes multiple sequences rather than recorded audio samples. XMI files are commonly encountered in extracted game soundtracks, especially titles using older game-audio systems such as Miles Sound System.

Because XMI contains instructions instead of a waveform, a normal audio player cannot always open it directly, and conversion results depend on the MIDI synthesizer and instrument set used during playback.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a RIFF audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM recordings. It is supported by audio editors, video software, game engines, operating systems, and archival workflows. WAV preserves the rendered signal without lossy compression, but uncompressed files are much larger than MP3 or other compressed formats.

For this conversion, WAV provides a fixed audio recording that can be edited, mixed, analyzed, or imported into software that does not understand XMI or MIDI.

How to convert XMI to WAV

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the XMI-to-WAV converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .xmi file and select WAV as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .wav file when processing finishes.

This method does not require installing a MIDI synthesizer or command-line tools. If the file contains several XMI sequences, check whether the converter produces separate outputs or renders only the first sequence.

Using desktop tools

A dependable local workflow is to convert XMI to MIDI, then render the MIDI through a software synthesizer:

  1. Use an XMI-to-MIDI utility such as xmi2mid to extract the sequence: xmi2mid input.xmi output.mid.
  2. Install a General MIDI SoundFont, such as an SF2 file, for the synthesizer.
  3. Render the MIDI with FluidSynth: fluidsynth -ni soundfont.sf2 output.mid -F output.wav -r 44100.
  4. Open output.wav in an audio editor and trim silence or export it with the required bit depth and channel layout.

TiMidity++ can perform the rendering instead: timidity -Ow -o output.wav output.mid. The exact XMI utility syntax varies by build, so run xmi2mid --help if the example command is rejected.

Quality and compatibility limits

XMI-to-WAV conversion is a rendering process, not a lossless container change. XMI normally has no recorded instrument audio; the selected SoundFont or synthesizer determines timbre, effects, drum mapping, volume, and sometimes how loops or controllers sound.

For general compatibility, render at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM WAV. Use 48 kHz for a video or production project that already uses that sample rate. A stereo 44.1 kHz, 16-bit WAV requires roughly 10 MB per minute; higher sample rates, bit depths, or multichannel output increase the size.

Some XMI files contain proprietary extensions, incomplete sequence data, or several tracks intended to loop inside a game. If a tool cannot parse the file, verify that it is an Extended MIDI XMI file rather than another format using the .xmi extension; renaming it will not make it convertible.
