How to convert aup3 to wav file

Many audio editors, samplers, video applications, and playback devices accept WAV but cannot open an Audacity project. Exporting the project creates a standalone audio file that can be shared, edited elsewhere, or archived.

What the AUP3 format is

AUP3 is Audacity’s project format, introduced in Audacity 3.0. It is a SQLite-based project database that can contain recorded or imported audio, tracks, edits, labels, effects, and project settings. An AUP3 file is not a conventional audio file, so renaming .aup3 to .wav does not convert it and most media players cannot open it.

AUP3 files are used by people who record, edit, mix, or restore audio in Audacity. Projects saved with Audacity 3.x or later normally use this format; older Audacity projects may instead use an .aup project file with associated data.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by Audacity, digital audio workstations, video editors, operating systems, samplers, and many playback devices.

PCM WAV preserves the exported samples without lossy compression, making it suitable for further editing, mixing, mastering, video production, and archival masters. Its disadvantage is size: an uncompressed WAV is much larger than an MP3, AAC, or Ogg Vorbis file at comparable duration.

How to convert an AUP3 file to WAV

Audacity is the most reliable method because it opens the project and renders its tracks, edits, and effects before writing the WAV file.

  1. Install and open Audacity 3.x or a compatible newer release.
  2. Select File → Open and choose the .aup3 file. If the project has unsaved changes, save it first with File → Save Project.
  3. Check the track contents, mute or solo tracks as required, and select the portion to export. With no time range selected, export the whole project.
  4. Choose File → Export Audio.
  5. Set the output filename and location. In the format or file-type field, select WAV (Microsoft) or the available WAV option.
  6. Choose an encoding such as Signed 16-bit PCM for broad device compatibility or 24-bit PCM for additional mixing and mastering.
  7. Click Export, review the metadata dialog if it appears, and open the resulting .wav file in the intended application to verify it.

A normal export is a mix of the audible tracks, not an editable copy of the project structure. To create separate WAV files for individual tracks, use Audacity’s multiple-file or split-file export options instead of exporting one full-project mix.

Using the built-in online converter

You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the AUP3 file, choose WAV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result if the service supports the project.

Online conversion requires uploading the project and may expose its audio and project contents to a third party. Use local Audacity conversion for confidential recordings, large projects, or projects with important editing data.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Exporting to WAV does not restore detail lost in the original recording or in earlier lossy compression. The exported sample rate follows the project or export settings; common values are 44.1 kHz for music and 48 kHz for video. Match the receiving application’s required sample rate when possible.

Use 16-bit PCM when a device or application prioritizes compatibility. Use 24-bit PCM when the WAV will undergo further mixing or mastering; it creates larger files but retains more amplitude resolution during production. Neither setting adds detail that was not present in the source.

Missing imported media, damaged project data, unsaved edits, or effects that depend on Audacity can affect the export. Listen to the WAV afterward and check its start and end points, track balance, clipping, sample rate, and duration.
