What the TRP format is

In the Audio category, .trp usually identifies an MPEG-2 transport stream recording created by an HDTV receiver, set-top box, satellite receiver, or DVR. The file commonly contains video plus one or more audio streams such as MPEG audio, AAC, or AC-3 rather than being an audio-only file.

Some TRP recordings are split into several segments or use device-specific encryption. A converter can extract audio only when the file exposes a readable audio stream and is not protected by the recording device.

What the WAV format is

.wav is a RIFF-based container most often used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by virtually all audio editors, DAWs, media players, and operating systems.

WAV preserves the decoded sample data without adding another lossy compression stage, but its files are much larger than the original compressed audio in a TRP recording. It is suitable for editing, waveform analysis, production, and long-term storage when broad compatibility matters.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The WAV file cannot contain more detail than the source audio. Converting compressed AAC, AC-3, or MPEG audio to PCM removes compression from the output but does not restore information discarded during the original broadcast encoding.

WAV files require approximately 10 MB per minute for stereo 16-bit 44.1 kHz audio; 48 kHz or multichannel output uses more space. Keep the source sample rate and channel count when preservation matters, or use -ar and -ac deliberately for a specific target.

A TRP file may contain several language or commentary tracks. FFmpeg's default stream choice is not always the desired one, so inspect ffmpeg -i input.trp before extracting. If FFmpeg reports no audio stream, the file may be video-only, encrypted, incomplete, or dependent on the originating DVR's proprietary software.
