A collaborator, mastering engineer, video editor, or hardware sampler may need a playable audio file instead of an Ableton Live project. Rendering the set to WAV creates a fixed mix that can be imported into most audio and video software.
What ALS files contain
An .als file is an Ableton Live Set used by Ableton Live. It stores project data such as tracks, clips, MIDI notes, automation, routing, device settings, and references to audio samples; it is not normally a finished audio recording.
The ALS file alone may not be enough to reproduce a project. It can depend on samples in the project folder, Ableton Packs, Max for Live devices, and third-party plug-ins. Open it in the same or a newer compatible version of Ableton Live, and obtain the complete project folder when possible.
What WAV files provide
WAV is a RIFF/WAVE audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. A rendered WAV can contain a stereo master, mono file, multichannel file, or separate track exports, but it does not retain editable Live clips, MIDI, automation, or plug-in settings.
WAV is accepted by DAWs, mastering systems, video editors, CD-authoring tools, and many samplers. PCM WAV avoids lossy MP3 or AAC compression, but its files are substantially larger than compressed audio.
Render an ALS set to WAV
- Open the set in Ableton Live. If media is missing, use File → Manage Files → Manage Set to locate it, or ask the sender for the project folder containing its samples. For future transfer, use File → Collect All and Save to copy referenced media into the project.
- Install or replace any missing plug-ins, Packs, and Max for Live devices before rendering. Play through the set and confirm that tracks, automation, and effects sound as intended.
- Set the export range in Arrangement View or enter the required Start and Length values in the export dialog. Include time after the final clip for reverb, delay, and other effect tails.
- Choose File → Export Audio/Video.
- Set Rendered Track to Master for one finished mix. Use All Individual Tracks when the recipient needs separate track files; these are not necessarily mixed stems. Export group tracks or dedicated submixes when actual stems are requested.
- Select WAV. Use the recipient's required sample rate; 44.1 kHz remains common for music delivery, while 48 kHz is standard for video. Use 24-bit PCM for most production and mastering delivery unless another specification is supplied.
- Leave normalization off unless the recipient specifically requests it. Apply dither once when making a final 16-bit export; it is usually unnecessary for 24-bit delivery and is not used for 32-bit floating-point files.
- Click Export and save the result, for example, as
song_master_24bit.wav.
Current Ableton Live editions can export audio, subject to each edition's track and feature limits. Ableton Live is the reliable conversion tool because it loads the set, plays its instruments, and processes its effects.
Compatibility and quality limits
Do not expect a general-purpose or online file converter to render an ALS project correctly. An uploaded ALS file does not provide the converter with Live's playback engine, licensed plug-ins, Packs, referenced sample files, or device settings. If you cannot open the project in Live, ask its creator to export a master WAV or the required stems.
Match the export sample rate to the delivery requirement or the dominant source material to avoid an unnecessary later resample. Upsampling a 44.1 kHz recording to 96 kHz does not add audible detail. Retain the original .als file and its collected project folder, since the WAV export is a fixed recording and cannot be converted back into an editable Live set.
For separate-track delivery, confirm whether the recipient wants return and master effects included. Master-bus limiting, compression, and loudness processing are appropriate for a final master but can make separately mixed tracks difficult to rebalance.
