TRP recordings from DVRs, set-top boxes, and broadcast-capture devices may not open in music players or editors. Converting the audio stream to OGG makes it usable in software that supports Vorbis or Opus and can reduce the file size.

What the TRP format is

In the Audio category, TRP usually denotes an MPEG-2 transport-stream recording saved with a .trp extension. DVRs, digital television receivers, and HD capture devices create these files; they may contain one or more audio streams together with video, subtitles, and broadcast metadata.

TRP is a container rather than a single audio codec. The audio may be MPEG-1 Layer II, AAC, AC-3, or another stream supported by the recording device. Some files use proprietary variants or encryption, which can prevent standard converters from reading them.

What the OGG format is

OGG is an open multimedia container commonly used for compressed audio. Vorbis is the traditional OGG audio codec, while Opus can also be stored in an OGG container; the .opus extension is more customary for Opus-only files.

OGG/Vorbis provides smaller files than uncompressed PCM and is suitable for music players, games, websites, and applications that support open audio formats. It is not universally supported by older hardware, some professional editors, or software restricted to MP3, AAC, or WAV.

How to convert TRP to OGG

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop method because it can inspect a transport stream, select only its audio, and transcode that stream without retaining video.

  1. Install FFmpeg from the official package for your operating system and place the TRP file in an accessible folder.
  2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.trp. Look for the audio stream index and its codec.
  3. Convert the first audio stream to OGG/Vorbis with ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg.

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -vn discards video. Vorbis quality 5 is a practical general-purpose setting. Use -q:a 7 or -q:a 8 for higher quality and larger files, or -q:a 3 for smaller files.

If the TRP contains several audio tracks, select another stream by changing the final number, for example -map 0:a:1. To retain multiple selected tracks, use separate commands or explicit stream mappings.

Using 101convert

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the TRP file, choose OGG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This method may not work for encrypted, damaged, unusually large, or unsupported TRP recordings.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion to OGG is normally lossy: the source audio is decoded and compressed again, so it cannot restore quality already lost in the TRP stream. If the source is already lossy, choose a moderate or high Vorbis quality rather than repeatedly converting the file.

Check the output with ffprobe output.ogg or a media player before deleting the original. If an application requires a specific codec, choose OGG/Vorbis rather than Opus; if it accepts Opus, ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg can provide efficient speech and general audio compression.
