Surveillance recorders often save footage as DAV, while music players, editors, and some media systems expect OGG audio. Converting it usually means extracting the audio track from the DAV recording and encoding it as OGG.

What the DAV format is

DAV is a proprietary surveillance recording format used by many DVR and NVR systems, especially Dahua equipment and compatible security cameras. It can contain video, audio, timestamps, and recorder-specific metadata, so a DAV file is not necessarily an audio file even when the recording includes sound.

You typically encounter DAV files after exporting footage from a CCTV recorder or opening a backup from a surveillance system. Manufacturer software such as Dahua Smart Player may be required because general media players and FFmpeg builds do not always recognize every DAV variant.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container commonly used with the Vorbis or Opus audio codecs. It provides smaller files than uncompressed audio and is supported by many desktop players, open-source applications, and web audio workflows.

Use OGG when the destination accepts Vorbis or Opus and you need an audio-only file. Choose Vorbis for broad compatibility; choose Opus when the target supports it and speech quality or lower file size matters.

How to convert DAV to OGG

3. Inspect the exported file with ffprobe recording.mp4 and confirm that it contains an audio stream.
4. Extract and encode that stream as OGG Vorbis with ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg.

If FFmpeg can read the DAV file directly, use ffmpeg -i recording.dav -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg. The -vn option removes video, -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, and -q:a 5 applies variable-quality Vorbis encoding.

For Opus output, replace the codec option with -c:a libopus -b:a 96k: ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -vn -map 0:a:0 -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.ogg.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Encoding cannot restore audio that was absent, muted, or already compressed in the DAV recording. The output quality is limited by the recorder's microphone, original codec, sampling rate, and bitrate; increasing the OGG quality setting cannot recover lost detail.

Some DAV files contain no audio stream, and some use proprietary audio codecs that third-party software cannot decode. If FFmpeg reports “unknown format,” “invalid data,” or no audio stream, export the recording through the manufacturer's player first.

DAV exports may include several audio channels or tracks. Use ffprobe to inspect them and change -map 0:a:0 to another stream when necessary. If the destination requires a specific codec, verify whether it accepts Vorbis or Opus inside an OGG container; the .ogg extension alone does not identify the codec.
