OGG is a container format, most often used with the Vorbis or Opus audio codecs. It is open, patent-unencumbered, and supported by many media players and editors. Compared with GSM, OGG can store much higher-quality audio and is better suited for general playback, streaming, and archiving.

OGG is commonly used for music, podcasts, game audio, and web distribution. If encoded with Opus, it can provide excellent speech quality at low bitrates, making it a strong choice for converting voice recordings from GSM.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable method is to use FFmpeg, which supports both GSM decoding and OGG output. It works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

1. Install FFmpeg if it is not already available on your system.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.gsm output.ogg.

5. Play the resulting output.ogg file in a compatible media player to verify the conversion.

Notes on quality and compatibility

Converting from GSM to OGG does not restore lost quality. GSM is already a low-bitrate speech codec, so the output will still sound like telephone-quality audio, even if saved in a higher-quality OGG container or codec. For speech recordings, Opus in OGG is usually the best choice because it preserves voice clarity efficiently. For maximum compatibility with older players, Vorbis in OGG may be preferable. Keep in mind that some software treats OGG as a container rather than a single audio format, so codec support matters as much as the file extension.
