What the AA3 format is

AA3 is an audio filename extension associated with Sony ATRAC3 recordings, especially music managed by SonicStage and OpenMG Jukebox. You may encounter it in older Sony music libraries, MiniDisc-related workflows, and backups made from Sony's proprietary music software.

Some AA3 files contain OpenMG copy protection. A protected file may play only through authorized Sony software and cannot be decoded by ordinary converters. The extension alone does not show whether a file is protected.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a container commonly used for Vorbis or Opus audio. OGG Vorbis provides lossy compression, good tag support, and compatibility with many desktop media players, games, Linux applications, and web-related tools. It is useful when an application accepts OGG but not ATRAC or when reducing the size of an uncompressed intermediate file.

How to convert AA3 to OGG

For an unprotected file, FFmpeg can decode ATRAC3 when the installed build includes the relevant decoder and can encode OGG Vorbis:

1. Install a current FFmpeg build.
2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the AA3 file.
3. Run ffmpeg -i "input.aa3" -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 "output.ogg".
4. Play output.ogg and check its duration, channel layout, and tags.

The -q:a 5 setting produces a variable-quality Vorbis file at roughly medium-to-high quality; use values from 4 to 6 for typical music, or use -b:a 192k when a fixed bitrate is required. If FFmpeg reports that it cannot determine the input format, try a current build and inspect the file with ffprobe "input.aa3".

If direct decoding fails but the file plays in authorized Sony software, export or convert it there to WAV, then encode the WAV with FFmpeg:

1. Export the track from SonicStage or another authorized Sony application as source.wav.
2. Run ffmpeg -i "source.wav" -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 "output.ogg".

Quality and compatibility limitations

ATRAC3 is already lossy, so converting it to Vorbis adds another lossy-generation step. Keep the original AA3 file and use a moderate Vorbis quality setting; increasing the OGG bitrate cannot restore detail removed by ATRAC3.

OGG is a container rather than one specific codec. The commands above create OGG Vorbis, not OGG Opus. If the destination specifically accepts Opus, use ffmpeg -i "input.aa3" -c:a libopus -b:a 128k "output.ogg", but verify that the target application supports Opus in an OGG container.

Metadata transfer from AA3 is inconsistent because Sony's OpenMG metadata may not be exposed to third-party decoders. Check the artist, album, title, cover art, and track numbering after conversion.
