Free online AA3 to AAC converter

Sony ATRAC3 recordings in AA3 format are difficult for modern phones, editors, and media players to open, so converting them to AAC can make them easier to play or share. AAC normally uses an M4A container, although an audio-only .aac file can also be created.

What the AA3 format is

AA3 is an audio file extension associated with Sony’s ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus codecs. It is encountered in recordings managed by Sony SonicStage and related OpenMG software, particularly music transferred from older Sony hardware or downloaded through Sony’s former music services.

ATRAC3 is a lossy codec, so an AA3 file has already discarded some source-audio information. Some Sony files are additionally protected by OpenMG DRM. A protected file may play only through the software or device that authorized it and may not be decodable by general-purpose converters.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec supported by phones, browsers, media players, streaming systems, and video editors. At a similar bitrate, AAC commonly provides better quality than older MP3 encoders, while retaining broad playback compatibility.

The usual distribution form is an MPEG-4 container with an .m4a extension. The raw AAC variant uses an ADTS stream and the .aac extension; use that form only when the receiving application specifically requests it.

How to convert AA3 to AAC

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Upload the AA3 file, choose AAC as the output format, select an audio bitrate if the converter offers that setting, and start the conversion. Download the resulting file when processing finishes.

This method works only when the AA3 file is supported and is not protected by OpenMG DRM. Do not upload copyrighted or private recordings unless the service’s handling of uploaded files is acceptable for your use.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can decode AA3 files that use a supported ATRAC stream and encode the result as AAC. To create a broadly compatible M4A file, run:

ffmpeg -i input.aa3 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

For a raw ADTS AAC file, run:

ffmpeg -i input.aa3 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f adts output.aac

Replace input.aa3 with the actual filename. Use ffprobe input.aa3 first if you need to check whether FFmpeg recognizes the container and audio stream. Bitrates of 128–192 kbps are typical for music; use 96–128 kbps for speech and 256 kbps when retaining more of the already-lossy source is preferable.

When direct decoding fails

If FFmpeg reports an unsupported format, invalid data, or encryption, open the recording in the Sony software that created or authorized it. If that software permits unprotected export, export to WAV, then encode the WAV with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i exported.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Exporting to WAV does not restore quality; it only provides an intermediate format that other encoders can read. If SonicStage or OpenMG refuses export because of DRM, a normal converter cannot bypass that protection. Use an authorized export, playback, or re-download option instead.

Quality and compatibility considerations

AA3-to-AAC is a lossy-to-lossy conversion. The AAC file cannot recover detail removed during ATRAC3 encoding, and encoding it again can introduce additional artifacts. Preserve the original AA3 file and use the highest practical AAC bitrate rather than repeatedly converting the same audio.

Choose .m4a unless a program explicitly requires raw .aac. M4A carries metadata more reliably and is accepted by more playback software; ADTS AAC is mainly useful for transport streams, specialized tools, and applications that reject container formats.
