Programs and devices that accept AAC may reject older .avr recordings, so conversion is useful for playback, editing, sharing, or reducing file size. AAC is commonly stored in .m4a or .aac containers and is supported by most current phones, media players, and video editors.

What the AVR format is

AVR means Audio Visual Research in the audio-file context. It is an older digital audio format associated with Audio Visual Research software and Macintosh-era recording workflows. You may encounter .avr files in archives of voice recordings, sound effects, or recordings created by legacy audio applications.

AVR is not the same as a modern compressed distribution format such as AAC. Support is limited in current media players, and some AVR files use recording parameters or header information that newer applications do not interpret correctly.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec designed to provide lower file sizes than uncompressed PCM audio at comparable listening quality. It is used by smartphones, streaming platforms, video software, music players, and many portable devices.

AAC can be delivered as an MPEG-4 audio file such as .m4a, or as an AAC elementary stream such as .aac. M4A is usually the more compatible choice because it provides a container for the AAC stream and metadata.

How to actually convert AVR to AAC

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the AVR-to-AAC converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .avr file and choose AAC as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting AAC file.

This option requires no software installation and is free to use. Do not upload recordings containing confidential or sensitive material unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using SoX and FFmpeg

SoX can decode many AVR files, while FFmpeg can encode the decoded audio as AAC. Install both tools, place the input file in a working folder, and run:

sox input.avr intermediate.wav

For a widely compatible MPEG-4 file, run:

ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

For an AAC elementary stream instead, use:

ffmpeg -i intermediate.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f adts output.aac

Replace the filenames as needed. If SoX reports an unsupported AVR variant, try opening the file in a legacy application that created it and exporting WAV, AIFF, or another PCM format before running FFmpeg.

Quality and compatibility

AAC encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the AVR source. The intermediate WAV step does not improve quality; it preserves the decoded AVR samples before AAC compression.

Use 128k to 160k for speech, 192k for general stereo music, and 256k or higher when retaining more music detail matters. The source's original sample rate and channel count are normally passed through automatically.

Keep the original AVR file as an archival master. AAC is lossy, and converting the AAC result again to another lossy format causes additional quality loss. Check the output duration, channel layout, and beginning and end of the recording, because damaged headers or unusual AVR parameters can produce truncated or incorrectly decoded audio.
