DVR-MS recordings are often difficult to play or edit outside Windows Media Center, while AAC is supported by phones, media players, editors, and streaming workflows. Converting the recording's audio to AAC also removes the video when only the soundtrack is needed and can reduce the file size.

What the DVR-MS format is

DVR-MS is Microsoft's Digital Video Recording container, based on Advanced Systems Format and designed for television recordings. Windows XP Media Center Edition and later Windows Media Center versions commonly created .dvr-ms files from scheduled or live TV broadcasts.

A DVR-MS file can contain MPEG-2 video, WMA or other supported audio streams, program metadata, and sometimes Microsoft digital rights management. You usually encounter it in archived Media Center recordings copied from an older Windows computer or TV tuner setup.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec used in MPEG-4 audio files and supported by smartphones, browsers, music players, video editors, and streaming platforms. At comparable bit rates, AAC commonly provides better quality than MP3, although the result still loses information during encoding.

Use a raw .aac file when a device specifically requests ADTS AAC. Use .m4a when broad metadata support, chapter handling, and media-player compatibility matter; an M4A file can contain AAC audio without changing the codec.

How to convert DVR-MS to AAC

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option because it can demux supported DVR-MS streams, discard the video, decode the source audio, and encode AAC in one command. Install FFmpeg, place the recording in an accessible folder, then inspect its streams:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms"

Convert the first audio stream to an ADTS AAC file at 128 kbit/s:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f adts "recording.aac"

For a more widely supported MPEG-4 audio file, use the M4A container instead:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart "recording.m4a"

Replace 0:a:0 with another audio stream selector if the input contains multiple languages or commentary tracks. Use -b:a 96k for speech, 128k to 160k for general television audio, or 192k when preserving more quality matters. The conversion can also be performed without installing software through the free converter on 101convert.com.

Quality and compatibility limits

AAC encoding is lossy, so increasing the output bit rate cannot restore detail already absent from the DVR-MS source. If FFmpeg reports encrypted or DRM-protected content, the recording must be authorized and playable before conversion; transcoding does not bypass copy protection.

Some DVR-MS files contain codecs or stream structures that a particular FFmpeg build cannot decode. Check the input report for an audio stream before converting. If the source has multiple channels, FFmpeg normally preserves the channel layout unless you add an audio filter or downmix option.
