For this conversion, the important point is that RM is a legacy multimedia container that often needs to be decoded before its audio can be saved in a modern format.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable approach is to use FFmpeg, which can decode many legacy RealMedia files and re-encode the audio to AAC.

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer if it is not already available.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the RM file.
3. Run a conversion command such as ffmpeg -i input.rm -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.aac.
4. If the RM file contains multiple streams or unusual audio parameters, you may need to specify the audio stream explicitly, for example with -map 0:a:0.
5. Play the resulting output.aac in a compatible player to confirm that the audio was extracted correctly.

If you prefer a graphical workflow, VLC can sometimes open RM files and convert them through Media → Convert / Save, but FFmpeg is usually the best choice for older RealMedia content because it offers better control and more consistent results.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

RM is a legacy format, so conversion success depends on whether the file uses a codec that your software can still decode. Some RM files may be partially corrupted, protected, or encoded with uncommon RealAudio variants, which can cause playback or conversion failures. Because AAC is a lossy format, converting from RM to AAC does not restore lost detail; if the RM source is already low bitrate, the output will only preserve that quality. Also note that a raw .aac file is less universally supported than .m4a; if you need maximum compatibility, consider saving the audio in an M4A container instead of a bare AAC stream.
