Free online WEBM to AAC converter

Some editors, upload systems, and mobile playback workflows accept AAC audio but not WEBM or its Opus audio track. Converting extracts the sound from a web video, browser recording, or screen capture into an audio-only file.

WEBM and AAC formats

WEBM is an open multimedia container based on Matroska technology and intended primarily for web delivery. It commonly contains VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis audio; a WEBM file can also contain audio only, or no audio track at all. Web browsers and web-video workflows use WEBM for playback and recordings created through browser capture features.

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec used in mobile devices, broadcast systems, streaming services, and many editing applications. AAC generally produces better quality than MP3 at comparable bit rates and is widely supported.

AAC is a codec rather than a single container format. A file ending in .aac usually contains AAC with ADTS framing, while AAC is often placed in an .m4a container for better compatibility with music libraries and Apple-oriented software. Use the extension and container required by the receiving program.

Convert the file online

Convert locally with FFmpeg

FFmpeg gives direct control over the output bit rate and container. To create an M4A file from input.webm, run:

-vn omits video, -c:a aac selects AAC encoding, and -b:a 192k sets the target bit rate. For speech, 96k to 128k is usually adequate; music commonly needs 160k to 256k.

If a system specifically requires an ADTS AAC file, use:

ffmpeg -i input.webm -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f adts output.aac

VLC can also perform local conversion through Media → Convert / Save → Add → Convert / Save. Select an AAC audio profile, set a destination filename with the required extension, and confirm that the profile outputs audio only. VLC profile names and available containers vary by version and operating system.

Quality and compatibility limits

WEBM audio is often already encoded with Opus or Vorbis, which are lossy codecs. AAC conversion requires re-encoding, so the result cannot be bit-identical to the source and may lose some quality; keep the original WEBM and avoid repeated lossy conversions.

A WEBM file without an audio stream cannot produce usable AAC audio. Check playback in VLC or inspect streams with ffprobe input.webm. AAC output contains audio only; retain the WEBM or create a separate video file if the picture is also needed.
