XM files are commonly used in retro game music, demoscene productions, and chip-style compositions because they can be very small while still supporting complex sequencing and looping behavior.

Unlike standard audio files, an XM file is not meant for direct playback on every device. It usually needs a tracker player or a converter that can render the module into a normal audio format.

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a compressed lossy audio format designed to deliver good sound quality at relatively low file sizes. It is widely supported by phones, media players, streaming platforms, and editing software. Compared with XM, AAC is a finished audio file: it contains the rendered sound, not the musical instructions. That makes it much easier to play anywhere, but it also means the tracker data and editability are lost.

How to convert XM to AAC

The most reliable workflow is to render the XM module to WAV first, then encode that WAV file to AAC. This two-step process preserves the best possible quality during conversion.

1. Open the XM file in a tracker player or renderer that can export audio. Good desktop options include OpenMPT on Windows and libopenmpt-based tools on other platforms.
2. In OpenMPT, load the XM file and choose File → Export → Wave to render it to a WAV file. Select the desired sample rate and channels if prompted.
3. Encode the WAV file to AAC using a media encoder such as FFmpeg. A typical command is ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a. The .m4a container is commonly used for AAC audio.
4. If your software can export AAC directly, you may skip the intermediate WAV step, but the two-step method is usually safer and more predictable.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

For best results, render at a high-quality WAV setting first, then encode to AAC at a reasonable bitrate such as 160 kbps to 256 kbps for music. Very low bitrates can blur percussion, high-frequency samples, and reverb-like effects common in tracker music.
