Free online MOD to AAC converter

Phones, editors, and media players may require AAC instead of a tracker module or camcorder MOD file. Converting can also remove video from a camcorder recording or reduce the size of an exported audio file.

What the MOD format is

MOD is an ambiguous filename extension used for two unrelated formats:

• Tracker module: a compact music file containing samples, notes, patterns, instruments, and playback commands. Amiga-era trackers popularized the format; modern trackers such as OpenMPT and MilkyTracker also open MOD files. Related tracker extensions include .XM, .S3M, and .IT.
• Camcorder MOD: usually an MPEG-2 program-stream video recorded by older JVC, Panasonic, or Canon camcorders. A corresponding .MOI file may contain recording metadata. The stream can contain MPEG audio or, on some models, AC-3 audio.

Open the file in MediaInfo or VLC before converting. A tracker module reports patterns or module metadata and has no conventional video stream; a camcorder MOD reports MPEG video and a program-stream container.

What the AAC format is

AAC is a lossy audio codec that generally delivers better quality than MP3 at comparable bitrates. It is widely supported by phones, browsers, current media players, Apple devices, and many editing or publishing applications.

A raw .aac file stores AAC frames without a general-purpose container. AAC in an MPEG-4 audio container is normally saved as .m4a and is compatible with more software. Use raw .aac only when the receiving application specifically requires that extension.

Convert a camcorder MOD with FFmpeg

1. Install an FFmpeg build that includes MPEG program-stream demuxing and the native AAC encoder.
2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the file.
3. To discard the video and create a raw AAC file, run:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.aac

-vn excludes video, -c:a aac selects AAC encoding, and -b:a 192k sets the audio bitrate. Use about 128k for speech or smaller files and 256k when retaining more music detail matters.

For the more compatible M4A output, use:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

If the file contains multiple audio streams, inspect them with ffprobe input.MOD and select one explicitly:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Replace 0:a:0 with the stream identified by ffprobe when necessary. This process extracts audio from the camcorder video; it does not preserve the video.

Convert a tracker MOD by rendering it first

A tracker module is not a conventional recording. Its replay engine interprets samples, patterns, effects, and timing commands, so first render the complete song to uncompressed PCM audio.

1. Open the file in OpenMPT, MilkyTracker, or another tracker that supports its format.
2. Export the complete song as a WAV file at 44.1 or 48 kHz using the program's export function, such as File → Export.
3. Encode the rendered WAV as M4A with:

ffmpeg -i rendered.wav -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

To produce raw AAC instead, change the output filename to output.aac. Direct FFmpeg conversion works only when the installed build can decode that module format, typically through libopenmpt support:

ffmpeg -i module.mod -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Rendering in the tracker is preferable when direct decoding fails, effects sound different, or the module requires a particular replay engine. Check the exported WAV for song length, looping, and playback speed before encoding.

Quality and compatibility limits

AAC encoding is lossy. It cannot restore detail discarded by an already compressed camcorder soundtrack, and converting a rendered tracker WAV to AAC cannot preserve information removed during the AAC encode. Do not encode a lossy intermediate before the final AAC export.

Bitrate changes file size and quality but cannot repair poor source audio. Around 192 kbps AAC is a practical default for stereo music; speech often works at a lower bitrate, while demanding music applications may justify a higher one.

Some players reject raw .aac despite supporting AAC in .m4a. Choose .m4a for phones, editing software, and general playback unless the destination explicitly requests an elementary AAC stream.
