It was widely used for streaming audio and video in the late 1990s and early 2000s, especially for low-bandwidth internet delivery. In practice, RM files often contain audio encoded with older RealAudio codecs, and they are commonly found in archived web media, legacy training materials, and older streaming libraries.

Because RM is a container, the exact audio codec inside can vary. That matters for conversion: some RM files are easy to decode, while others require older or specialized software support.

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It is an open, royalty-free audio format that compresses audio without losing any quality. FLAC is popular among audiophiles, archivists, music libraries, and anyone who wants to preserve audio in a compact but fully reversible form.

How to perform the conversion

The best approach depends on whether your RM file contains audio that modern tools can decode directly. For many cases, FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop tool because it can read a wide range of legacy media formats and export directly to FLAC.

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer if it is not already available.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the RM file.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.rm -vn -c:a flac output.flac.
4. If the RM file contains multiple streams or unusual codec data, inspect it first with ffmpeg -i input.rm to confirm that the audio stream is detected correctly.
5. Play the resulting output.flac in a FLAC-compatible player to verify the conversion.

Notes on quality and limitations

FLAC is lossless, but that does not restore quality that may already have been lost in the original RM audio. If the RM file was encoded with a low-bitrate RealAudio codec, the FLAC output will preserve that exact audio quality, including any compression artifacts.

Compatibility is the main challenge with RM. Some RM files use older codecs that are not supported by every converter. If FFmpeg cannot decode the file, you may need a legacy RealPlayer-based tool or another application that can first extract the audio stream before converting it to FLAC.

Also note that RM files may contain video as well as audio. For an audio-only FLAC conversion, the video stream should be ignored or removed, which is why the -vn option is useful in FFmpeg.
