XWM files are commonly extracted from Bethesda game archives, but many audio editors and players do not open them directly. Converting them to FLAC provides a broadly supported, lossless container for editing, playback, and archival storage.

What the XWM format is

XWM is Bethesda's filename extension for xWMA audio, a Microsoft WMA-based format used for sound effects, dialogue, and music in games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. You normally encounter .xwm files after extracting Bethesda archive files with tools such as Bethesda Archive Extractor or Archive2.

XWM is intended for in-game playback rather than general audio production. Standard media players and editors may reject the extension even when they contain a decodable WMA stream.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is an open, lossless audio format supported by many players, editors, tagging tools, and archival systems. It reduces PCM audio size without discarding samples and preserves the decoded source exactly when the input is already lossless.

FLAC is useful when you need to edit or catalog extracted game audio outside the game. It is not inherently smaller than every XWM file, and it cannot restore quality already removed by the source's lossy WMA compression.

How to actually convert XWM to FLAC

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the .xwm file, choose FLAC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .flac file. Use a desktop method instead if the file contains sensitive material or the service does not recognize its XWM variant.

Using FFmpeg

Recent FFmpeg builds can decode some XWM files directly because the underlying stream is WMA-compatible:

ffmpeg -i input.xwm output.flac

For a batch conversion in a shell, use:

for f in *.xwm; do ffmpeg -i "$f" "${f%.xwm}.flac"; done

On Windows PowerShell, use:

Get-ChildItem *.xwm | ForEach-Object { ffmpeg -i $_.FullName ($_.DirectoryName + '\' + $_.BaseName + '.flac') }

If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or codec, first decode the file with a Bethesda-focused utility such as UnxWMA or MultiXwm. In that utility, select the XWM files, choose WAV or PCM as the temporary output, and run the conversion. Then encode each WAV file with:

ffmpeg -i input.wav output.flac

Remove the temporary WAV files after checking the FLAC output and its duration.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Converting XWM directly to FLAC does not improve the source audio: FLAC preserves the decoded samples, but the original WMA encoding remains the limiting factor. Avoid converting through MP3, OGG, or another lossy format before FLAC.

Some XWM files use codec parameters or headers that generic FFmpeg builds cannot interpret. A specialized XWM decoder is then required; renaming the extension to .wma may help a decoder recognize the container, but it does not convert the audio and should not replace actual decoding.

Check the output with a player or ffprobe output.flac. Compare duration, channel count, and sample rate with the decoded source; Bethesda assets may be mono, stereo, or contain short effects whose metadata is less reliable than the audio stream.
