Older mobile-phone ringtones and Yamaha SMAF audio are often stored as MMF files, while modern editors, players, and archives commonly expect FLAC. Converting the file renders its playable audio into a lossless, broadly supported audio stream.

What the MMF format is

In the Audio category, MMF usually means Yamaha Mobile Music Format, also called SMAF (Synthetic music Mobile Application Format). It was designed for ringtones, alert sounds, and short music files on older mobile phones, especially Yamaha-compatible feature phones.

MMF can contain ringtone-style sequence data that drives the phone's tone generator, sampled audio encoded with Yamaha ADPCM, or both. Yamaha SMAF authoring tools, ringtone composers, and mobile-phone content software created these files. You may encounter them in old phone backups, ringtone collections, legacy software projects, and files downloaded for early cellular handsets.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compresses PCM audio without discarding samples. It is suitable for archival storage, editing workflows, playback libraries, and sharing when WAV-size files are inconvenient.

FLAC usually provides smaller files than WAV while preserving the decoded audio exactly. It does not preserve MMF-specific ringtone events, instrument assignments, phone playback behavior, or proprietary container metadata; those elements must be rendered as ordinary audio during conversion.

How to convert MMF to FLAC

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when its build includes the MMF demuxer and decoder.

1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the MMF file in an accessible folder.
2. Open a terminal or Command Prompt in that folder.
3. Run ffmpeg -i input.mmf -map 0:a:0 -c:a flac output.flac.
4. Play output.flac and check its duration and channel layout.

The -map 0:a:0 option selects the first audio stream. Omit it if the file has only one stream. To inspect the source before conversion, run ffprobe input.mmf. FFmpeg decodes the MMF into PCM and then encodes that PCM as FLAC; it does not copy the original MMF data into the FLAC container.

A sequence-based MMF may also sound different from a sampled recording after rendering.

If the source contains very short ringtone audio, the FLAC file may be only modestly smaller than WAV. Preserve the original .mmf alongside the FLAC when ringtone events, instrument data, or future re-rendering matter. Test the output with a FLAC-capable player because some older applications support neither FLAC nor all MMF variants.
