Free online VIV to FLAC converter

FLAC is useful when an older VIV recording must be edited, archived, or played by current audio software. Because VIV usually refers to an old video container, conversion may require extracting its audio stream rather than simply renaming the file.

What the VIV format is

.viv commonly identifies VivoActive video files created by older Vivo Software products and used for internet video or multimedia playback. The format is uncommon today, and VIV files may contain video, compressed audio, or both; the extension alone does not identify a specific audio codec.

Some VIV files are not audio-only sources. A successful conversion therefore depends on whether the file contains a decodable audio stream and whether the selected software still supports the legacy VIV container and codec.

What the FLAC format is

FLAC is a lossless audio format supported by media players, tagging tools, music servers, and audio editors. It reduces file size without discarding information from the decoded source and supports metadata such as artist, album, and track number.

FLAC is appropriate for archiving or editing when the source audio is already lossless or when you need a widely supported intermediate file. It will not restore quality lost when the audio was encoded inside VIV with a lossy codec.

How to convert VIV to FLAC

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop option when its installed build recognizes the VIV file.

1. Install a current FFmpeg build from a trusted package source.
2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the file.
3. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.viv. Look for an audio stream and note its stream index and sample rate.
4. Extract the first audio stream with ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a flac output.flac.

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn excludes video, and -c:a flac applies FLAC encoding. If the VIV file has several audio streams, replace the stream selector with the required index, such as -map 0:a:1.

For a standard tagging-compatible output, you can specify a compression level without changing audio quality: ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a flac -compression_level 5 output.flac.

Using 101convert

Upload the VIV file, select FLAC as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file if the service identifies a supported audio stream. A VIV file containing only unsupported video or audio cannot be converted successfully by an online tool.

If FFmpeg cannot open the file

Try opening the VIV file in VLC. If it plays, use Media → Convert/Save, add the file, choose Convert, select an audio profile configured with FLAC, and start the conversion. VLC support depends on the codecs included in its build; playback does not guarantee that every stream can be exported as FLAC.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion decodes the source and re-encodes its audio as FLAC. If the original VIV audio is lossy, the FLAC file is lossless only from that decoded result, so it will not recover missing detail and may be larger than the original.

If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the file is probably video-only or uses an unsupported codec. In that case, converting to FLAC is not technically possible until the audio is decoded with software that supports the specific VIV variant. Check the output with ffprobe output.flac and listen for the expected duration before deleting the source.
