What the TRP format is

In the Audio category, TRP usually refers to an MPEG-2 transport stream recording. Digital television receivers, DVRs, set-top boxes, and some capture applications create TRP files; although they may contain video, they can also carry MP2, AAC, AC-3, or other audio streams. A TRP file may include several language tracks, commentary tracks, or unrelated video and data streams.

Because TRP is a container rather than one fixed audio codec, the conversion method depends on the stream inside it. Some files can be repackaged without changing the audio; others require decoding and re-encoding.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only filename extension commonly used for an ISO Base Media container. It most often contains AAC audio, with ALAC available when lossless compression is required. M4A supports metadata such as title, artist, album, and track number and is accepted by many phones, media players, editing programs, and music libraries.

AAC M4A normally produces much smaller files than uncompressed audio at comparable listening quality. M4A is a suitable target when the TRP contains a wanted audio track and the output does not need to retain the original television-stream structure.

How to convert TRP to M4A

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Select the TRP file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. If the TRP contains multiple audio streams, use a desktop tool to select the required track explicitly.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg handles most unencrypted transport-stream recordings and provides control over stream selection and audio quality.

1. Install FFmpeg from the project distribution appropriate for your operating system.
2. Inspect the available streams with ffprobe -hide_banner input.trp. Look for entries marked Audio and note their order, language, and codec.
3. Extract the first audio stream and encode it as AAC with ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a.
4. Replace 0:a:0 with 0:a:1 or another audio-stream index when the desired track is not first.

The -vn option excludes video. The 192k setting is a practical AAC bitrate for stereo speech and music; use 128k for smaller files or 256k for higher-quality music encoding.

Copying compatible AAC audio

If inspection shows that the selected stream is already AAC, try remuxing it without re-encoding: ffmpeg -i input.trp -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output.m4a. This preserves the original encoded audio and avoids another generation of quality loss. If FFmpeg reports that the codec cannot be written to the M4A container, use the AAC-encoding command instead.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Transcoding MP2, AC-3, or another source codec to AAC is lossy, so it cannot restore quality already discarded by the original broadcast or recording. Encoding at a bitrate higher than the source does not recover detail; it only increases file size.

TRP recordings can contain damaged timestamps, encrypted broadcasts, unsupported codecs, or proprietary recorder metadata. FFmpeg may then fail to decode the file or produce audio with gaps. Test the output from start to finish, especially when the source was recorded from live television.

Use -map 0:a:0 only when the first audio stream is wanted. To preserve all audio tracks in one output, use -map 0:a, but separate M4A files are often more compatible with music applications. Metadata and chapter information from a DVR recording may not transfer completely.
