Convert BAND to WAV

A mixer, video editor, DAW, or playback device may require a standard audio file instead of an editable GarageBand project. Exporting the project as WAV produces an uncompressed mix for editing, sharing, or archiving.

What the BAND format is

A .band file is an Apple GarageBand project used on macOS, iPhone, and iPad. It is usually a package containing recorded audio, MIDI or software-instrument data, loops, effects, automation, and project settings; it is not an audio file, so renaming .band to .wav does not convert it.

A project can contain multiple tracks, but a standard export renders the audible arrangement as one stereo WAV file. Editable MIDI regions, plug-in settings, automation, and separate track controls are not preserved in that file.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container commonly used for PCM audio. It is supported by most DAWs, video editors, media players, and broadcast workflows, and it preserves the exported audio without MP3- or AAC-style lossy compression.

WAV files are substantially larger than compressed formats. Use WAV when an application needs uncompressed source audio or when further editing is expected; use AAC or MP3 for routine streaming and messaging.

How to export a GarageBand project on macOS

1. Open the .band project in GarageBand. Open the package from Finder without extracting or editing its internal files.
2. Check the arrangement, mute or remove unwanted tracks, and set the cycle or project range that should be rendered.
3. Choose Share → Export Song to Disk.
4. Select WAV as the file format, choose the available resolution or quality setting, specify the destination and filename, and select Export.
5. Open the resulting .wav file in an audio editor or media player and check its duration, channels, sample rate, and sound.

GarageBand exports the mix, including the audible track effects and master output, rather than the project structure. To create synchronized track files, solo one track or mute every other track, export each file with identical start and end points, and repeat. Logic Pro for Mac can open many GarageBand projects and render them through File → Bounce → Project or Section; it is useful when you need more control over sample rate, dithering, mastering, or stem exports.

How to export on iPhone or iPad

1. Open GarageBand and return to the My Songs browser.
2. Touch and hold the project, choose Share → Song, and select Uncompressed (WAV).
3. Select Share, then save the file to Files or send it to another compatible app.

The exact labels can vary slightly by GarageBand version and device. If the uncompressed WAV option is unavailable, update GarageBand or export the project from GarageBand on a Mac.

Online converters and compatibility

Mainstream online converters such as CloudConvert and Zamzar generally convert ordinary audio files, not GarageBand’s proprietary project packages. Do not upload a .band package unless the service explicitly lists GarageBand project support and you accept its privacy and file-retention terms; an upload form accepting the extension does not prove that the project’s instruments, loops, or effects can be interpreted.

For a real project, GarageBand or Logic Pro is the reliable conversion method because it renders the arrangement using the required instruments and effects. After exporting, an online service can convert the resulting WAV to another format if needed, but it cannot restore project tracks or editability.

Quality and format limitations

WAV export cannot repair clipped recordings, distortion, or quality already lost in compressed source audio. Keep the project’s native sample rate when possible; changing it during export resamples the audio and may alter timing or introduce processing differences.

Choose the project’s intended bit depth when GarageBand provides that setting. Converting a 16-bit source to 24-bit WAV increases file size but does not create additional recorded detail. A stereo mix also cannot be separated into clean individual instruments after export; use the original project or export stems before closing it.
