A JVC Everio camcorder may store recordings in TOD files, while audio editors and production applications commonly expect WAV. Converting the file extracts its soundtrack as uncompressed PCM audio for editing, playback, or archiving.

What the TOD format is

TOD is a video recording format used mainly by high-definition JVC Everio camcorders and associated JVC transfer software. A TOD file contains MPEG-2 video together with an audio stream, commonly MPEG audio or AC-3, so converting it to WAV means extracting and decoding that audio rather than converting video data.

TOD files usually appear after copying recordings directly from a compatible camcorder or its storage media. Some video applications identify the same recording through related MOD or MPEG-based workflows, but the .TOD extension specifically indicates the high-definition Everio recording variant.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by audio editors, digital audio workstations, media players, transcription software, and archival workflows without requiring a specialized camera codec.

WAV preserves the decoded sample values without an additional lossy compression stage, but it requires substantially more storage than compressed audio. It is useful when an editor needs direct access to the soundtrack or when compatibility is more important than file size.

How to convert the file

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when the TOD file contains a readable audio stream:

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the TOD file in an accessible folder.
  2. Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or a shell in that folder.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i "input.TOD" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le "output.wav".
  4. Open output.wav in an audio editor and check its duration, channels, and sample rate.

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn discards video, and pcm_s16le writes standard 16-bit PCM WAV. Omitting -ar and -ac lets FFmpeg retain the source sample rate and channel count where possible.

For a different audio stream, replace 0:a:0 with another stream selector such as 0:a:1. If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the TOD file contains no extractable soundtrack or is damaged.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the TOD file, choose WAV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Avoid uploading recordings containing confidential or personal material unless the service’s handling policies are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The WAV file cannot contain more detail than the TOD soundtrack. Converting a compressed camera audio stream to PCM removes codec dependence but does not restore information discarded during the original recording.

WAV files are often much larger than the source TOD audio: storage is approximately sample rate × bit depth × channel count × duration, plus a small header. A 48 kHz, 16-bit, stereo recording requires about 1.15 MB per minute.

If the converter offers sample-rate or bit-depth settings, use the source values for preservation. Downsampling or reducing bit depth can reduce quality; increasing them only enlarges the file and cannot add source detail.
