Another editor, playback device, or archive system may require a rendered WAV instead of an editable Adobe Audition session. Exporting creates a standard audio file from the project mix; renaming .sesx to .wav does not convert it.

What the SESX format is

.sesx is Adobe Audition's XML-based multitrack session format. It stores track arrangement, clip positions, fades, effects, automation, routing, markers, and references to source audio files rather than serving as a finished audio recording.

Most referenced recordings remain outside the session file. If media was moved, renamed, deleted, or stored on another computer, Adobe Audition must relink the missing files before it can render the complete project. The session may also depend on installed third-party plug-ins.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container widely supported by editors, mastering applications, broadcast systems, hardware players, and archival workflows. PCM WAV is normally uncompressed, so it preserves the rendered sample values without MP3- or AAC-style lossy compression, but its files are larger.

For production delivery, 24-bit PCM is common; 16-bit PCM is suitable for CD-compatible output and systems that require it. Match the session's sample rate when possible. A higher export setting cannot restore quality missing from the original recordings.

How to render the session in Adobe Audition

  1. Open Adobe Audition and choose File → Open, then select the .sesx file.
  2. Resolve every missing-media prompt using Audition's relink or locate controls. Confirm that each clip points to the intended original file.
  3. Check the session sample rate, track effects, automation, routing, master output, and clipping. Play the full timeline to verify that all material is present.
  4. Choose File → Export → Multitrack Mixdown → Entire Session.
  5. In the export dialog, select Waveform or WAV, set the destination and filename, and choose the required sample rate, channel layout, and bit depth.
  6. Select Export. Audition renders the audible master output into a new WAV file and leaves the .sesx project unchanged.

To export only part of the session, set the in and out points and select the corresponding range option. To create separate files for tracks or clips, use Audition's multitrack export options instead of a single mixdown.

Quality and compatibility limits

The exported WAV contains the rendered mix, not editable tracks, clip boundaries, effects settings, markers, automation, or routing. It will not reproduce unavailable source media or plug-ins. Exporting to a lower sample rate or bit depth can discard information; exporting at a higher setting does not improve the source.

Online converters generally cannot process a .sesx project correctly because they do not have reliable access to its referenced media, session routing, plug-ins, or missing-file relationships. If Adobe Audition is unavailable, request a WAV rendered by the project creator or rebuild the project from the original audio in another DAW. A service such as CloudConvert can convert individual source audio files, but it cannot reproduce the SESX mix or its effects.

For archiving, retain the .sesx file, every source recording, plug-ins, and any required linked assets. The WAV is a playback or delivery copy, not a replacement for the editable project.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting SESX to WAV merge all my tracks into one file?

Yes, rendering an SESX session to WAV produces a single PCM audio file containing the session mix. Track separation, clip positions, volume automation, and individual effect settings are no longer separately editable.

Are SESX edits and effects preserved in a WAV file?

They are preserved only as the sound heard in the rendered mix, not as editable session data. The WAV does not retain the SESX timeline, multitrack structure, or most session-specific editing controls.

What WAV settings should I use when rendering an SESX session?

Choose a sample rate and bit depth that suit the intended use and avoid unnecessary conversion from the source audio. PCM WAV is generally lossless, but the result can be much larger than the session file, and clipping can occur if the mixed levels exceed the available range.

Why does an SESX to WAV conversion fail or produce missing audio?

An SESX file is a session description that can reference separate source recordings rather than containing all audio inside itself. If those referenced files are unavailable, moved, or unsupported, the rendered WAV may have silent or missing sections.
